I toured with Jay-Z in a motor home when he was the hype guy for The Jaz, they opened for Jody Watley.

Jay walked into my parents kitchen when I stopped us there to use the phone (pre-mobile phone era) and said to me "who put that basketball hoop up?"

I said "My dad and I built it YEARS ago, I'm surprised it's still there"

And he laughed and said "well, you didn't do a very good job"

We walked outside and the backboard and hoop were barely hanging on to the edge of the house, upside down, support columns in disarray.

The group of us (it was pretty heavy) removed it from the house, causing as little damage as possible, and set the whole thing over by the side of the house, inside the gate to the back yard.

My parents weren't home at the time.

A few days later I called my mom & dad, apologized for not seeing them when we made our brief tour stop. Neither of them mentioned the hoop and backboard.

I said to my dad "sorry about the backboard"

He said "huh, what are you talking about?"

I said "go look at it".

When he got back on the phone (cord phone, old school in those days) he said "Oh wow, I thought the house looked different!"
