Default Jimmy Ryan's Statistics

So I bought a nice 1887 Buchner Gold Coin type card today, of Jimmy Ryan, and looking him up in the baseball database (http://www.baseball-reference.com/pl...ryanji01.shtml) I am really surprised he is not a Hall of Famer. For a pre-war (and pre-1900) player, his statistics are very solid, especially compared to a ton of borderline HOF players:

.308 Average
2513 Hits
1643 Runs
118 Home Runs
419 Stolen Bases

I might also add that judging by the picture attached, he was also an amazing air guitar player.

Those of you (like Rich Klein!) with SABR knowledge, can you tell me if he ever got any momentum for going in the hall, or was he never in consideration?

Believe he wasn't considered because of his character, and he just wasn't a "big name" player. For era comparisons, Ryan has better stats than King Kelly, John Ward, Buck Ewing, etc. list goes on.

Doh! Sorry about that - I didn't recall seeing a recent posting on him, and usually google searches pull up Net54 posts on these obscure player searches.

I just caught up on the other thread you started and enjoyed reading the comments. Reading some of the articles about him suggest he definitely had a Ty Cobb-like personality, beating up 2 reporters and a train conductor!

No worries, didn't get that much attention, so glad it was brought up. Thank you, he was a hell of a player and I believe based off his image and lack of character as well as lacking a "big name" popular player, that's why he's not in. IMO
