Default Let’s See Some Gypsy Queens

We’ve had lots of threads showing cards from different sets, but a dearth of threads showing 19th century cards. Let’s see some N175 Gypsy Queen baseball cards, not the lithographic N162s, but the photographic N175s. They aren’t common so show em if you got em.

Hi Pete,
I really like your Brown's Champions GQ - wish it were in my collection, instead of yours! Hope to see you at the Chantilly Show next week.

Here's my N175 type card - a Washington player, of course!

Great cards guys. I knew you had some locked away
in those type collections. I especially like that Browns Champ. Pete-who is your other one?

I love the GQs, here is a trio of Detroits, a part of my collection that has been slow to grow.

Thank you. Too bad it is trimmed but for what I paid for it 20 years ago, I can't really complain.

Joe, I enjoyed seeing your "Grasshopper Jim" Whitney card. Washington didn't have much of a team in 1887, finishing in 7th place in the NL with a 46 - 76 record. But, this wasn't Whitney's fault, as he was the ace of their staff with a 24 - 21 record.

Hi Barry! I hope all is well with you and the family. Just as is the case for 1887 Old Judges, all Brooklyn Gypsy Queens are outdoor poses.

Default Possibly another partial Hall of Famer

Is this Connor a Gypsy Queen? I always assumed it was an Old Judge, but after seeing ctownboy's example with the shaded arch at top and that my card has it as well, makes me think my Connor is GQ all the way. Shown with a couple of Old Judge cards for size comparison.

Hello Brian,

Your trimmed Connor is an altered N175 (small GQ). The Old Judge equivalents of the same pose are script cards. Congrats on being proud owner of a GQ

David's Keefe would be full 2" wide if the border were still intact (the quarter is 0.955" diameter for reference). His card is the large format GQ (2" x 3 1/2" when whole).

The shape of the Gypsy Queen logo at the card top led people to trim cards into the "cathedral window shape" seen here. Years ago Lew Lipset auctioned off a complete set of large Gypsy Queens, all trimmed like that.

Oldjudge,

I don't know how many large Gypsy Queen's Lew Lipset has auctioned but the person I got my Keefe from (Ted Koch of Indianapolis) had five other large size cards and he consigned his cards with Lew to sell around 2002.

I am still trying to find that auction and the results those cards sold for. Why? Because I had a chance to buy all of the cards but didn't have the money (and I am sure the seller was going to give me a discount from what they eventually sold for).

David

Jay, I know you have more than just the George and Porter . . .

Could you, would you, post your favorite:
  1. Common
  2. HOFer
  3. Non-Baseball GQ with N175 Layout
They are neat cards, would be eye candy for all of us.

I really don't have favorites but I'll post one of each. BTW, I believe that, like all pre-1888 Old Judge issues, Gypsy Queens were a mixed subject set featuring boxers (very rare), possibly actresses, and of course baseball players.

Nice, thank you for selecting some Detroits! It is a rarity to see a non-baseball GQ with the N175 layout, love it!

I have this N174 Gypsy Queen boxer, but I gather they're not nearly as rare as the N175-style boxers like the one Jay posted.

Here are some of the actress cards, courtesy of the Met web site from the Burdick Collection. This shows that Gypsy Queens were a multi-subject set (baseball, boxing, actors, etc) just like all Goodwin & Co. 1887 photographic issues.

in my type collection I have a Mary Albert GQ. It sits next to my N167 GQ actress - which is the designation number I think you meant you weren't interested in :-) Nice pack - perhaps from Dennis G.(?)? I have the carton - looking for a pack.

Yeah, the seller was a complete idiot. Listed Sullivan at a low BIN in the tobacco card section rather than the boxing card section and didn't understand the difference between the GQ types.

A fool and their money...

Henry-I'm not sure I understand what you are saying, but as you know N167s predate this type of Gypsy Queen. I'm not sure what the other actress card you are mentioning is. Why not post an image.

Default well

just that you had mentioned something like not the lithographed N162 and felt you meant not the n167. Sorry about that. In any event I have a GQ n175 mary albert residing in an SGC 60 holder. It's on a display shelf that's very difficult to get to. I promised someone a pic of a presidential heads BB card on the same shelf - maybe three weeks ago :-( I'll try and get to it next week if you need it.

oooops..... I'm have word juggling episodes it seems. I meant if you need the picture. Wondered why the exuberant thanks and I re-read my post. I would however entertain some sort of trade favorable to me O) as you are showing interest in one of my types!
