It's certainly informative, if not vintage. My question after this thread and the one on the Williams is: why does anyone collect autographs, especially from prominent players? You're begging to get ripped off.

Bill

I've been collecting baseball cards almost my entire life but the only autographs I own are those I acquired myself in person at the ballpark.

I know nothing about authenticating signatures but just have always figured that just like some people can mimic voices and other things, probably some people can quickly learn how to copy a Mickey Mantle and other signatures to the point that it could possibly be indistiguishable from a real autograph.

I agree with what was said however I want to point something important out. FDS did also accept outside submissions so their stuff isn't necessarily bad. Back in the early 1990's, I submitted many of my most prized items to FDS for certification. This was in the pre-PSA/DNA and GAI stages. FDS authenticated many of my items. Of course, after the scandals broke, I resubmitted these items to GAI and had them re-authenticated. However, my point is FDS didn't print COA's like some of the other forgers did. There also accepted submissions.

having their autographs forged so they have created things like "WGA" or Wayne Gretzky Authentic and "SYA" or Steve Yzerman Authentic. How does everyone feel about these? It does bring out two interesting things, the particular player is receiving a premium for his autograph (which I think he deserves) and the consumer can buy an autographed item that is sure to be real.

This would not remove fans from receiving these same autographs at ballparks, ice rinks, etc, and they would still know the origin, it would just make it a little harder if they decided to sell it.

It wouldn't help much with deceaced players, but it would be a nice beginning.

Please share your thoughts.

Why collect cards? Everyone has their own reasons for what they collect, and after reading this board for a few weeks, I can see misgrading, alterations, trimming, stain removals, reprints, etc. plaguing the card business. I don't see how different that is from what is going on in the autograph business. If there is a dishonest buck to be made in any collectible, someone will attempt to figure out a way to do it. Just like in any collectible, if you take the time to study, and buy from the right sources, your collection should build up successfully.

I made a true statement that the FBI shut him down. Yes he authenticated some items that where real but I would say Ninty percent where not.

Shellyjaffe... please don't think I was trying to discredit you. Actually I said I agree with what you said. I just wanted to point out that FDS did accepted outside submissions as well so an FDS certificate alone is not an indication of a forgery.

Richard pretty much summed up the best answer. Personally if a signiture looks the least bit funny, I just walk away. I also do not do business with unknowns. I always buy from dealers who I've researched and feel are trustworthy. The no. 1 rule of any hobby is to DO YOUR HOMEWORK.

Thanks Shelly for your great post.
