Default 1954 Johnston Cookies Milwaukee Braves Uncut Sheet

Hello all, first time posting here but have been following the forum for a little while now. I have some questions regarding a find that I have recently encountered and am in the process of trying to obtain. I have come across an uncut sheet of 1954 Johnston Cookies Milwaukee Braves. The sheet is in pristine condition and contains 6 complete sets of the 1954 Braves. Of course included in this is the 1954 Hank Aaron.

I'm interested in finding out if anyone has any experience with these cards and their potential value. I have a few misc cards from this set already (spahn, matthews) but in poor condition. This sheet presents itself in mint condition.

Does the value degrade if I have the sheet cut to obtain a set? Is there a resale market for such an item?

Thanks a lot for any feedback. FYI the seller is looking to obtain around 7,000 dollars for this sheet. I think it's a bit overpriced but I could be way off. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

It's ok....neither do most other people who have been on the forum much longer. Some claim they don't know history .

Nice item, but $7000 is too high

looks like 234 cards on the sheet, making roughly 6-2/3 sets (some cards are double printed, and 1 card is shortprinted though)

the SCD lists the "uncut sheet" as $4750 NRMT, but Im not sure if its the same large sheet you have. they also list the set as $1500 NRMT

the 1954 D356-2 cards are common, Ive had many and the common players dont bring much. the demand is in the Aaron mainly.

if I had the sheet I'd never cut it, I like leaving things in their rarest form, and the sheet will always be far rarer than the individual cards IMO.

PS. is there any Bob Thomson cards on the sheet??? it may tell you if the sheet was an early printing (far more demand), or a later printing, after he was removed (he is the shortprinted card and the book prices him about 8X more than a common)

2nd photo, 4th row down, 5th card over from the RIGHT is the Thomson card I believe.
So the sheet looks to be an early printing one. Its said that Thomson was removed from production after his early season injury (giving Hank Aaron more playing time)

I've seen uncut sheets in major auctions before and they definitely are in demand, in large part because the Aaron is a rookie card and because uncut sheets in general from that era are rare and in demand.

Thanks a ton for the feedback! I'm hopefully going to get an opportunity in the next few days to see the item in person. I'll post any findings on the Thompson. I was doing some research as well and found that this person has been attempting to sell this for quite some time now. I'm not entirely sure why it hasn't made it to auction yet. She appears to have some knowledge on the piece and claims that the her grandfather was offered $40k in 1977. (I find this extremely hard to believe).

Thanks again! I'll keep you updated with my findings.

$40K lol

that "hype story" would turn me off right there.

I agree its not worth the $7K.

there are small sheets too
http://keymancollectibles.com/cards/...uncutsheet.htm

PS shes being using that "$40K" line for over 4 years now (Net54 post in 2008), so at least sticks with the same unbelievable story. (and David, check out your post, you were wrong lol )

There was one on Craigslist not too long ago. The person selling it was from Mequon, just north of Milwaukee, and they were asking $4500. The condition looked similar to your pics.

saw the one on CL Milwaukee, its $7500 and was from 3 days ago, its the same sheet

now if you could somehow get this crazy $$
http://www.robertedwardauctions.com/.../2004/232.html
then the large sheet is worth well over $7K, but I think they paid too much for the REA small sheet. And now Im thinking the SCD pricing for the "uncut sheet" is based on this one crazy $$ sale.

Interesting, I'm fairly certain it is the same person. The price has changed drastically. Very skeptical at this point, but keeping an open mind. If I can somehow manage to snag this for a very affordable price I'd be fairly happy.

Any insight you guys can give and being able to verify that it's not a reprint? Like I said earlier, I do have some not so good condition ones that I can compare it too but not much information beyond that. Anything regarding the stock I should look for? Special stamping from the printer, etc...?

Thanks again guys! Truly amazing the amount of knowledge on these boards.

Regards,

Jeff Shelton

Definitely DO NOT CUT IT UP in any way! It would greatly lessen the value!

Jeff, you don't have to worry that it is a reprint/counterfeit. The fakers don't have the capacity for such a large format.
