I have seen that pennant before. They are pretty rare, but not impossible. I think they did a similar red version as well. I only recall seeing Cincinnati Reds pennants like this though. I will let someone more familiar with Reds memorabilia chime in for pricing. It was never really something that overly interested me. Off the top of my head I want to say in the $150-200 range.

Also, it is oversized. I don't recall the exact length, but 35 inches sticks out in my memory. Larger on the piping end as well.

I could have sworn I seen a Yankees pennant in that size from this era at a card show I frequent. I could be wrong. I'm not as knowledgeable as you guys and I only glanced at it in passing.

Just curious Mike...Do you ever go to the White Plains show? I used to hit that one when I was in CT. Miss that one.

Hi Rob,

Yup, that is the one I was referring to. I will also hit the one at Hofstra if I am ever out on Long Island.

Hope all is well sir.

Basically everything Jason said about the Reds Pennant is spot-on.

They do turn up with some frequency, but are tough to find in acceptable condition. The combination of the photo insert, large size and white felt create “the perfect storm” for damage and wear.

I have only seen the Reds in this particular style... but being a 1961 Champs pennant, it’s quite possible that a Yankees version was made as well. You’d think they’d turn up periodically, however, if that was the case.

Doing well Mike. How about you?

That show was always fun. Found some good pennants there. It was a nice ride down 84 to NY too. Scenic and no traffic. Took about two hours but went by fast.

I don’t know anything about it, but I’m curious as to what the show valued at?

Not related, but I know you’d would appreciate my most recent before and after bleach candidate.

I’d say the bleaching did not go well. I have always been a proponent of bleaching but I recently f**ked up a really good pennant.

I should have said an ‘after (on top) and before (on bottom)’... I think the top looks pretty good all things considered.

Looks much whiter Erik. Good job.

Beware the red paint. Bleach is it's kryptonite. I learned the hard way...but not as hard as Rob.

Great pennants Rob. Love, love that Jets Pennant. Is it mid 60's?

I take Metro North up to White Plains for the show. Love train rides. So peaceful and relaxing. Not NYC subways. Those are nightmares.

I used take Metro North into Grand Central all the time...until I mastered driving in NYC.

That Jets pennant is probably mid to late 60's. I think it's part of the same series as the Saints pennant below it and the Saints became a team in 1967.

Default Price on this?

I've had this on eBay at $199 or best offer for quite a while and rec'd no legit offers. It's in beautiful condition. Am I too high? I think Egner's book had it much higher. I'd rather keep it than give it away but maybe I'm over valuing?

Okay pennant guys, help me solve this mystery. Just added this Dodgers pennant to the collection. Is this a football pennant? As I am sure you know there was a NFL team with this name until 1943 and then in the AAFC 'til 1948.

For the prosecution:

1. The bum is kicking what appears to be a stinkin' football.
2. The '48 Football Dodgers did have blue and white as its colors. Different colors in other seasons, though.
3. I have never seen this design before, which is why I had to have it.

For the defense (baseball?):

1. It is a cloth pennant, you know, the thin kind that fades easily gets loose threads on the edges when worn. I don't think that any cloth pennants were made in the 1940s. Have never seen one dated as such, nor any cloth pennants of the STL Browns, Phila A's, and Boston Braves. '55 Dodgers baseball pennants were cloth, and I doubt it goes back much earlier than that.

2. No evidence that the football team were referred to as "bums", and image searches of old BD football programs do not show a bum logo or reference.

Any thoughts? I should add that either way, I'm happy with the purchase, regardless of sport.

Well that solves the mystery as to who got it! I was the under-bidder, and was immediately regretful I didn't go higher. I think you really scored at that price. Congrats, Greg, on an amazing pickup.

Yeah, pretty sure it's football. The Bum was probably so darned popular in Brooklyn, that they just carried him over to the Football Team. While perhaps not the "official mascot" these things weren't as closely sanctioned back then. It could have been made as a "tongue in cheek" ironic humor kind of thing.

But regardless of why/how the made it... It's insanely rare and very cool.

I think it's baseball. Obviously none of us have seen the pennant before so it's very rare. Here are some of my thoughts:

1. If football I have never seen a pennant that early made of woven fabric. Every woven pennant I have ever seen started in the early 50's.

2. I have never seen the football team referrrd to as the bums. The bum seems much more popular in the 50's. I've never seen anything related to football with the bum.

3. The only thing linking the pennant to football is the bum kicking what looks like a football. It could be something else, but I agree it looks like a football.

4. I guess it could be a one off prototype that never got issued, who knows.

I tend to agree with Jason. Could you post one more picture of just the bum and whatever it is he's kicking? Maybe if I saw the whole picture, in context, I could make some guess about the "football shaped object."

My vote is football. Pretty hard to refute the evidence. The bum is kicking a football. Don't see a bat or glove in his luggage.

"Bums" was a pretty ubiquitous term back in the depression. Didn't the baseball Dodgers earn the nickname by being a bad team? The football Dodgers had only 4 winning seasons in 14 years during that era and easily could've earned the nickname as well...only not as popularly.

The material the pennant is made of gives me pause, but the graphic trumps it.

What's in the bum's left hand? And what are those "poofs"? Smoke?

Love these mysteries!

Great stuff!!!! Thanks to everybody. Now I am a bit disappointed, primarily because it is from the 1960s. But still it is great to know.

Now let’s solve the mysteries of why the Phillies don’t have a stadium pennant and the Cubs never had a team picture pennant.

Not the traditional team photo pennant. But they have a few from 1969. here is one example

Nice! Now, what is it about the Cubs (and even White Sox) with their team pictures being just players’ heads, like on this pennant. I’m thinking now primarily about baseball team cards (Topps) from the 70s. Some didn’t even show necks, just disembodied heads. No other team, but the Cubs did it often and also the Sox. There has to be an explanation!

Thanks for sharing the pic ...

So did anyone see the batch of old Phillies pennants that ended last night on eBay? Each was described in the listing as having come from a collector "who looked not only for quality, but for unusual features and variations in graphics and colors" (exact quote).

Well, turns out the entire batch was auctioned as a lot by Huggins and Scott one month ago. Same exact pennants with some imperfections that clearly identify them.

http://feb18.hugginsandscott.com/cgi...l?itemid=24001

Just found it interesting, that's all ....

Absolutely a nice flip. It's the bit about the "collector" that was, um, unnecessary ...

Yeah....Not sure what the point of adding that was. In addition to not being true (unless he knew the guy who submitted to H&S), I don't see how it will add to the sale price.

Is that the pennant version of "this car was owned by a little old lady from Pasadena"?

Maybe he should've added that his pennants were gently driven.

He does that a lot. Same seller flipped this one immediately from H&S, and I was happy to get it. In Huggins, it was grouped with a bunch of travel/souvenir pennants.

Anyway, I'd never seen this image of Chief Wahoo before, and have been collecting these forever. Surprised it didn't go for more...

I was watching that lot too Mark. That Cleveland pennant was the only one I was interested in. I ended up not bidding though. Any idea what year that's from?

That’s a crazy Cleveland Indians pennant. Everything about it....the font, the colors, Chief Wahoo....is unique!

Is that pennant orange or brown?

It’s predominantly orange. And I’d say early to mid 50s is a safe bet for this one, based on the material and design. Kind of goofy looking, and polically, it’s no better than the other Chief Wahoos... maybe worse. But must confess I do love it, despite its repulsiveness.

Default Seals E-bay

So... at the risk of outing an auction... I just saw this pennant on e-bay, along with a few other similar ones from the same seller (Hollywood Stars, Baltimore Orioles, Boston Braves). It is a BIN as opposed to a regular auction, so I figured that it would be ok if I raised a question about it (and the others listed by the seller, I guess).

I have what I believe to be an original of this pennant and it differs from this one in several different, but pretty subtle ways. At first glance, it looks right (in many ways). Has anyone ever seen these before? More modern versions of these pennants? By Mitchell and Ness or someone similar?

^^^^ that thing has GOT to be repro.....unless it’s been hermetically sealed in an underground vault for the last 60+ years. I would love to see your version.

It means that these are not original pennants, but are vintage.... meaning they are reproductions that were produced a while back (not recent reproductions).

Ideally, the seller could've explained this in more detail, but at least he notes it, and has them priced accordingly (close to the amount M&N Repro Pennants typically sell for). It's hard to believe many people would be fooled by these.
