Default 1932 U.S. Caramel Babe Ruth on eBay. Is it fake?

Posted By: Brad Green

Please take a look at the auction below for a 1932 U.S. Caramel Babe Ruth.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=86847&item=5206058979&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

I'm assuming that the card is a fake, since no one has placed the opening bid of $190. If this card were real, I would think that $190 would be a pretty good price. The feedback of the seller is not reassuring.

If it is indeed fake, what's the dead give-away?

Brad

It's fake for sure. I dont see the staining, but the the white mark on Ruth's hat above his left temple is a sign. Most of the reprints have that blemish. Also, when a seller has private feedback or feedback below 98%, I just dont bid no matter what.

The dead give aways (without even looking at the card) are:

Feedback private
Feedback 4
Positive feedback < 99%
Private auction
Seller claims to not be a professional - probably because thief is not accepted as a profession (yet)

It is unusual for a seller with no ebay history to come up with two Ruth cards - and no other cards. Both cards are not obvious fakes (to me). But the situation reeks of danger.

The above are controversial statements relating to the behavior of others, therefore I can not remain anonomous.

My name is Gilbert Maines and apparently I am way more controversial an individual than I thought.

actually when speaking about fraud on ebay I don't really have an issue with being anonymous. It's when individuals or auction houses are talked about that I have an issue with remaining anonymous.....and I promise not too many more posts concerning this from me.....In the future I will just do as I have said. I believe it is best for the welfare of the board.....regards

Gil, welcome and why not just use your name all of the time? I use mine, even though I sometimes say things I shouldn't, this way I stand behind everything I say and it is easier to apologize for screw ups. Dan.

And I approved this [misleading, false and scurrilous] message"

Thank you Dan.

Please be assured that I too stand behind my statements, eventho sometimes they are not as well thought out (stoopid) as they should be.

I have been posting here for over two years under my given name, however, recent events which adversely affected Ben lead me to think it is prudent for all to maintain a low profile.

This approach is not working out though since I apparently have a penchant for controversial statements. We will see how this experiment works out real soon.

Please contact me at identify7@aol.com for an elaboration or clarification on the above.

Me thinks Paul is correct. No white blemish/spot above his left temple on this graded example:

Yes, the Ruth 1932 Caramel's with the curved upper right border are repros. However, I've been seeing some better fakes with the red filled in. Most of those "better fakes" have staining on the back upper left corner and/or the white spot above Ruth's temple.

edited for spelling.
edited to correct info.

Someone has bid on the Ruth card. Maybe they're planning on sending monopoly money to pay for it.

I guess the bidder's logins are kept private so no one can email the bidders about the card being fake...

Gil, sorry, I didn't mean that you didn't stand behind your statements. 2 years! Christ where have I been? again sorry, I am clueless.

The US Caramel Ruth fakes are getting better because the trash making and selling them always ask, how do you know it is fake? We tell them and they correct it. I do not tell any more, the fake frojoy guy asked me and I wouldn't tell. It makes the fakes get better!

Did any of you email eBay to tell them of this scam? Somehow they found out about it and cancelled the auction and the seller's account. Let's hope that this seller -- and this card -- never again return to eBay. But, something tells me that she'll be back somehow or other...

That didn't get her booted, ebay doesn't care about the fraud. I turned in her contact info as being invalid, scum never uses the correct contact info!
