Default 1911 Baseball Bats- Walter Johnson SGC 30

About 9 years ago I picked up an ungraded Walter Johnson card that I sent in to SGC. Came back that it is called a Baseball Bats card and it is graded SGC30. Anyone have any information on this card, how many are in the set and the value of this card. I have not seen any other in my auction books. What is the population on this card? Thanks so much.

Steve,

Baseball Bats are hard to come by and popular among collectors. With the card graded SGC 30, the set and the player will bring a nice price. The cards from the set are hand cut. Good luck with the card.

Hi Steve
There are 50 different, including a few variations, listed in the SCD. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see new discoveries of different players in the future, unless there is information I am not aware of that would rule that out.

In the 2009 SCD your card is 660 in vg 1100 in ex and 2200 in nrmt. I think those prices are low and would value your card in the 1200-1800 range....maybe even more if 2 people fought over it in an auction. They were issued as the side of a candy box. There are 3 types known. I am curious which yours is? I will take a wild stab at the population of your card and say that less than 10 exist. (We need to remember the demand side of the value equation is as at least as important as the supply side.) Hope this info helps.

It is interesting that it has the "Toytown" stamp on it.

Not to be a killjoy or anything as that is a very nice card but I don't think that card should have gotten more than an Authentic grade based on the cut.

There is an inner border around the image itself and every card from this set that I have ever seen graded or owned has been trimmed to the second (or outer) border that is another 1/4 of a inch or so outside the inner border.

I don't know what the difference would be in the price as rarity in a set like this is more important than the technical grade, however, that card doesn't include the outer border I had always assumed was required by the TPGers to give a technical grade to.

Default Steve, here's my WAJO example with ...

the orange border all the way around it, like Leon's card of Bender.

FYI, I once had a duplicate WAJO, but I sold it back in 1999 to a California collector. This one was cut such that it had the orange border on 3 of the 4 sides. So, now we know that at least 3 WAJO examples exist.

I bought a WOJO for $350 in 1997 from a buddy in SoCal but I don't have it any longer. Traded it for something at some point. It had a full orange border.
