c.1930 Yankee Stadium Postcard

To avoid eating up the 3rd March pick-up thread, I started this post. In that thread, I presented that Yankee stadium Ruth postcard with the question c.1930? I asked so I could possibly narrow it down some more, c.1925 or c.1930, but no later. There are no indications this card is not vintage.

Below is a scan from Tuff Stuff's Baseball Postcard Collection, which contains a white border version without Ruth's image. My postcard is not white border; it is linen.

The photo is of the 1926 World Series.

I have not been able to discover much about this PC. A number of years ago I decided not to bid on one because I felt it was not vintage. I remember phoning the company mentioned on the reverse (in Brooklyn, I think), and they had not been in business before the fifties. I can't swear that it was the same company as appears on your example. If this is, indeed, a vintage card, perhaps it was also reprinted later.

I believe I read somewhere a long time ago that all of those Yankee Stadium postcards like this one with Ruth on it are not period. The one above looks to be artificially aged to me as well.

Not all, but many are reprints done around 1980.



I collect these and prefer ones that have been used.

Yes, and I have also seen the one with McGraw of the Giants.







Both as original and as reprints.

As for the one shown here (one with Ruth) I am not confident that it is an original. FKW would probably know for sure though.

The Curt Teich company produced postcards from the 1900s through the 1970s -- with pretty consistent typography from the 1920s through the 1960s. Amazingly, their archives still exist and are public, as part of a county collection in Illinois. Here: http://www.lcfpd.org/teich_archives/

Teich postcards were produced in great quantities and most have a number on them that makes them easily dateable -- but this one does not. (It looks like a re-print of someone else's postcard, rather than a Teich original.) The "original?" PC in this thread does have telltale signs of being a reprint, unfortunately. The whole look of it looks like a reprint, to me. The graininess and the dark blotches are not good signs. regards

The back is wrong for a 1920's postcard, it is mostly likely 1940's or 1950's.

I didn't want to be the bearer of bad news in the pick-up thread, I just knew that the postcard you purchased had been discussed before. A few years ago, I thought about bidding on one on e-bay, but something just didn't seem right about that postcard.

Anyway, the seller should be given props. It doesn't sound like he tried to mislead bidders intentionally. He is doing the honorable thing and I'm glad you were able to work things out.

There are other points about this card. Almost all Curt Teich postcards have distinctive code numbers that can be used to date the card; this one does not. Teich produced very few sepia postcards. I have seen a version of this card that is black and white rather than sepia and indicates manufacture by Colourpicture of Boston and distribution by Blair Cedar & Novelty Works of Camdenton, Missouri. I can't think of many images that show up on both a Teich and a Colourpicture postcard, the two companies being competitors. Another puzzler is why a postcard of Yankee Stadium would be distributed in Oklahoma or Missouri; postcard distribution was generally strictly geographic.

The image of Yankee Stadium used on these postcards, but without Babe Ruth, does appear on a postcard published in the mid-1920's that looks like a black and white photo colored with blue and green. That card is numbered N.Y. 440 and does not credit any publisher or distributor.

Unlike the McGraw insets, I thought it was understood that ALL YS images with Ruth, are indeed fakes.
Time will tell how sincere this seller is... An honorable guy will cut the thing up upon it's return. Let's see if it reappears in the near future.
