What is with some of the shipping costs on ebay. A guy wants $13.95 to ship a $10.00 card. I refuse to deal with these people. Wrote him and he said the shipping cost they had down was right. What a joke.

He can charge whatever he wants for shipping and we as buyers should factor that into the purchase price. In other ebay categories it's common to see items listed with a $9.99 buy it now and $100+ shipping charges. To be fair, some sellers have high fixed shipping prices but they include insurance and assume the card will sell for a few hundred dollars; the best thing to do as a seller is to calculate the insurance off the final price.

Actually, ebay rules prevent excessive shipping charges http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/listing-shipping.html as they reduce ebay's commission

Max - I'm not saying it's OK - I'm just saying it's common practice on ebay and I've never heard of ebay doing anything about it. It certainly is not what a seller with integrity would do save for the case I mentioned.

Was it a particularly heavy card?

If the card weighs 30 pounds it would still only cost $8 in a flat rate priority box. You can ship bricks for $8 in a flat rate box if you wish.

Here's an example of shipping costs that will affect ebays profits:

$100 shipping. That's pretty funny. Maybe he plans to deliver the card in person to the winner.

I would have a hard time justifying bidding on items that have shipping fees that are geared towards circumventing ebay's fees.

If a seller is willing to rip off ebay they are just as likely to rip off me.

it used to be a common practice to have things selling for a penny and paying 20 dollars shipping - that way the sellers got around the "final value fee" and Ebay got screwed out of their money - not that i cared that Ebay was losign money, but there were a lot of people as well who thought they were getting great deals and ended up paying more than something was worth -

I have people complain about my shipping ($3.50) all the time - and i explain that I use a padded envelope ($1) and paypal shipping with confirmation (1.50 or more + .18 for confirmation) and then gas to and from the post office/mail box - that generally helps -

my wife just started selling on ebay recently and had a guy ask if she could make shipping any cheaper - shipping was $2.00 - really, if you just want me to throw it in a white envelope with a stamp and pray, sure...

I have found some great deals that i passed on because i felt shipping was too high

Russ you can get your mailers much cheaper, I pay around 20 cents each.

I buy 100 at a time. And if you are using Paypal shipping you can have your mail man pick them up.
