Default OT: Will Verlander get 20 more wins than losses?

Justin Verlander got his 22nd win today to move to 22-5 on the season. If my calculations are correct he has 3 or 4 more regular season starts. Can he get to 20 games over .500?

The last guy to do it (again, if my searching is correct) was Bob Welch in 1990 who went 27-6. Pretty strange accomplishment given that the most wins he had in any other season was 17. But that was back in the "bash brothers" days and the A's won 103 that year.

Default Nope

Absolutely not. Jimmy Smokes (Leyland) will rest him now that the tigers are 8.5 up and he's gone to using him every 6th day instead of 5th. My guess is JV only has 2 maybe 3 more starts, then smokes will set-up the playoffs to get JV 2 starts against NY or Boston. He's the cy young winner by far and if you disagree try watching him....today was his worst start since may and he gave up 3 hits. Possible MVP as well. But no, he wnt go +20 on .500 imo.

The Bob Welch 27-6 season was a remarkable year considering he really didn't put up spectacular pitching numbers compared to his previous seasons. However, every time he took the mound, he was given unbelievable run support. It would be nice to see someone make another run at 30 wins.

He will have to win his 3 remaining starts - 9/13 @ Chicago, 9/18 @ Oakland or 9/20 @ Kansas City and 9/24 or 9/25 vs. Baltimore at Comerica - tall order but possible. He should be well rested for the playoff opener on Friday Sept. 30th

It will be quite interesting, because Verlander himself says he pitches better on four days rest, rather than five or more. It's been terrific watching him on large screen, high def here in Detroit--this guy has reared back and hit 101 mph in the later innings consistently when he needed to, yet has an unbelievable falling off the table curve thrown from exactly the same arm slot at 79 mph or so, plus a nifty change in the upper '80's with screwball type action, breaking down and in to the righties, and a slider that's progressed well beyond the work in progress stage and into a real out pitch itself!

I also saw him pitch live twice, and wouldn't you know it, he actually lost one of those, to the White Sox some time ago.

My hunch is that he gets to 25 wins.

All the best, guys,

Larry

Default Im a thinking he only has 2 starts left w/ Smokes making that decision

...Turner will get another spot start and we may see Coke again even though he has seemed to find a groove out of the bp.

But he has been the most dominant tiger pitcher I have seen (starting in 83), and he does have all 4 of those pitches plus that walk....

My question is will he lose again this year?

Coke won't be starting anymore. Verlander might get 25

No, he hasn't.

9 of Verlander's last 10 starts were on 4 days rest, including his last 3.

Default Incorrect Chris

He faced Chicago on 9/2 -- Tampa Bay on 8/22 & Kansas City on 8/6 all with 5 days rest......three of his last seven starts and Tuesday will make it 4 out of 8 when he goes for #23 against the White Sox........He will get two more starts after that........Are the sportswriters serious about voting a .266 hitter with 157 strikeouts MVP??? Granderson has had a great year but he is not the Most Valuable Player in the A.L. - There are many better choices including JV

By my logic and according to smokes 9/13 is the next start. He could go again 9/18 at Oak, but Ill bet 9/20 @ KC will be the next start. W/ 5 days rest he could go again 9/26 but thats a monday and playoff start on friday this yr. Whenever smokes has the option to rest a guy he takes it, always has and probably always will. I would love to see 25-5, but id rather see 6-0 in the postseason. JV has nothing left to prove this yr, hes the mvp to his team unquestionably and probably the league. You feet like you can see a no-hitter every time he pitches. The other thing, hes always the one at the top pf steps in the dugout, always fist-pumping and rooting his guys on. JV for cy young hands down and at least my al mvp this yr.

Default According to ESPN

The schedule according to ESPN (http://espn.go.com/mlb/team/schedule...detroit-tigers) has Verlander starting 9/13 and 9/18 (Chicago and Oakland). Logical progression would have him pitching against the wOe's on 9/24 with the other four starters ending the season giving him maximum rest for the playoffs while still keeping him sharp.

If he gets the win against the ChiSox (the only winning team he'd face), I'd bet that he gets to 25... and further bet that I'm in the stands on 9/24.

Erick - Are you planning a road trip to Detroit for the game on the 24th?

That's what I get for glancing at the schedule; nope, I thought the game was in Baltimore. Guess I won't see that game live after all!

Default 23-5!

Two more starts: Oakland and Baltimore. Both teams are well under .500; I still think he'll get there...

I am a huge Red Sox fan, but I agree.........I think Verlander should be the MVP this year.

Impressive year for sure. He currently leads the majors (AL & NL) in just about everything including Wins, SOs, ERA, WHIP, etc.

Default Mvp

I'd been thinking Granderson for the MVP, what, with not only the HR's, RBI's but also a ton of runs scored, but I've shifted to Verlander--No. 24 sealed it for me. 24 in a five-man rotation, wow! Figuring an old-time 4-man rotation would give him 25% more starts, we're starting to get into 1968 Denny McLain land! Go JV!

Regards,

Larry
