1976 Hostess question

The 1980 Nozaki Error and variaton book lists 1976 Hostess cards thru #70 that come in black AND brown print on back. I've never found any cards in brown print. Can anyone confirm this? Thanks, Randy

I spoke to Ralph once many years ago when I was working for CCP. I had called to confirm the existence, or non-existence of a few variations and he told me he had seen every variation in his guide at least once. Whether true or not I can't say. I use his book to this day, even though it's outdated. I really need to get a copy of Gilkeson's 2nd ed. book I think, which updated the Mistake Manual back in the 90's.

Dave, I knew Ralph pretty well back then too. My name is listed as a contributor in the 1980 Mistake Manual. I have a feeling the brown print may not exist, but I haven't totally ruled it out yet. Ralph gave me credit for discovering the 1968 Topps Mike McCormick white/yellow variation in the early 1980s, and wrote about it in Baseball Hobby News. He has not been in the organized hobby for 20 years or so. Randy

I can confirm their existence as well. It's only the panels that have this variation, not the single Twinkie cards with the black bands. I can't recall if the reason for the variation was the product the panel was issued on, the printing plant for the boxes, or both.

I would doubt the numbering issue since full panels are three cards and 70 doesn't divide into 3.

That being said (and stepping into BST territory) I need the 1976 Twinkie card of Fritz Peterson to complete my set. Can anyone hep?

Brown backs are probably all #'s. I have almost all the panels from 91-150 in brown including many dupes if someone would like to trade for Redman Tobacco.

Of his Air Personality job in Chicago; I have not heard any update since then -- but in today's radio market; it will be difficult for him to get another job in radio.

I think I posed this was some more details in the comments on Reelradio.Com when the news a bit fresher.

Depending on who you source, you come up with a number of answers......... Gilkeson's Errors / Variations book from '89 says "Cards were issued in both the normal black print, and in brown print" ; Sports West (in 1977) says most numbers from 70-150 are issued in both colors. From my recollection, and my collection, Sports West is probably closer to being accurate. I also have a number of complete boxes and the only brown printed backs are found on the Ding Dong products, at least in my collection. Back in '76 it was very challenging to assemble complete sets of Hostess panels. First off, there were several hostess boxed products that had card panels printed on the bottoms of the boxes (Ding Dongs, King Dons, Suzy Q's, Twinkies, Crumb Cakes, Cupcakes, Ho Ho's...I may have missed one or two). Not all numbers were issued on each product, so a collector had to purchase numerous products in order to finish off a set. The sizes of the boxes were different as well. The card panel on boxes of Ho Ho's had a very slim border, and those boxes were often found crimped at the corners , as a result of transportation and handling...... I can verify that the following numbers exist in BROWN ink from the '76 set (94-120, 127-129, 139-144,148-150). I collected this set originally in the San Francisco Bay Area, and most of my experiences with this set are from West Coast sources. Itt-Continental Baking, at the time, had numerous bakeries, packaging, and distribution centers around the United States and some products / numbers may have been produced or marketed slightly different depending on location. I remember seeing a "square" panel that was marketed in New England, and of course, the singles (with black stripe on back) were available regionally (Southern California was the closest market to me...I bought them at Ralph's Market in Laguna Hills when I was visiting my grandmother)... Another thing that original collectors have in common...They will probably NEVER consume Hostess products again !!)

I also have several whole boxes and only the Ding Dongs have BROWN backs.
In addition to Mark's BROWN backs I have 91-93,121-123,130-135 and 145-147. Collected in Seattle.

I hate to crush a theory but I have a panel with brown print numbered 52-54




I've always loved the "L shaped" panels in this set. I've never fully figured out the numbering on them, however.

I have all the panels numbered above 115 in that format, but I also have panel #73-75 and 79-81 (pictured below. I'm not sure how many more panels were issued in this way.

Thanks for the additional feedback on the Hostess set, and for posting a scan of the ' square panel' I know that those were marketed , minimally, in the greater New England area, as I recall on the cupcake boxes. I've never found anyone in Northern or Southern California that purchased the 'square panels' in the grocery stores, or day-old bakeries. Larry Moe's experience (in Seattle) is almost similar to mine in Northern California . It could be that the entire series was far more regional than we actually know. I remember getting the Hostess Albums at our local day-old Hostess store, and many collectors that I dealt with at the time (& over the last 30 years) do not recall ever seeing those in their markets. Do others have 'full boxes' of brown printed Hostess to verify if they were from "Ding Dong" boxes only, or from other Hostess products. Again my experiences are from collecting these on the West Coast primarily. It wouldn't surprise me if others from various regions of the country have different experiences.
