Default FIELD of DREAMS......Movie TRIVIA quiz

Posted By: Ted Zanidakis

Three part TRIVIA quiz......

Since 1984 with The Natural, there have been a good number of BB movies and my favorite of these is the....FIELD of DREAMS.
It has an excellent cast and an uplifting positive story. And, usually any movie with James Earl Jones is in it, is a good one.
You just have to love his character in this movie.

1st Trivia.....Name James Earl Jones "rookie" movie ?

2nd Trivia.....A young Ray Liotta's role as Shoeless Joe Jackson is well acted.....except for ?

3rd Trivia.....Field of Dreams and Eight Men Out were in the movies in the late '80s. Both focusing on Shoeless Joe Jax.....so, I
ask how much did these movies influence the sudden value increase of his BB cards....i.e., E90-1, Cracker Jack, etc., etc....?

Note....1989 SCD Price Guide lists E90-1 Joe Jax for $800....1914,15 Cracker Jacks for $1500.

..........1992 SCD Standard Cat. lists the E90-1 for $7500....Cracker Jacks for $8000 each.

In that short time interval the values of the other Stars in these sets increased nominally.

Yes....in the movie, Liotta wears his glove on his right hand, which implies he threw left-handed. Hollywood completely reversed Shoeless Joe's
throwing and batting ways.

Just minor "flubs" in a really inspiring BB movie.

and saw all those trivia things going across the screen last night...it said that Ray Liotta spent alot of time trying to learn to hit lefty, but then the director said not to worry about it...so he went back to his natural righty, and has regretted not staying to true to Jax ever since.

I forgot how much I love that movie...a great way to finish off a Sunday night of TV after watching the Bears comeback victory

Answer to Question #1 - I believe his "rookie" movie was "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb".

And please don't forget Burt Lancaster (Moonlight Graham). The best scene in a wonderful movie was when he walked off the field to save the choking child.
I still am moved every time I see that movie and especially that scene.

Ted,

I can recall Burt Lancasters last role as a grandfather who passes on and his grandkids give him a Viking funeral (to the initial shock and dismay of their parents). I don't recall the movie name. I'll look it up.

My favorite line in Field of Dreams...

"Even Ty Cobb wanted to come, but no of us could stand the Son of a Bitch when he was alive so we told to stick it!!"

Awesome movie...

I think it's quite possible that Field of Dreams had a significant role in the soaring value of Dr. Archibald "Moonlight" Graham autographs too. I haven't seen more than a handful offered over the past 5-10 years. I was fortunate to obtain a signed personal check at a major show shortly after the movie opened, and another example (ex-Wingler collection) from vintage autograph dealer Jim Stinson. Now if I could only find a decent Burt Lancaster autograph.

Thanks.

ed- i still get chocked up at that line, every time...

the original cut excluded the word "dad"...after they screened it to a few test audiences, they were given the idea to add that word...then costner overdubbed it into the final cut (if you notice you do not see his face when the word "dad" is spoken)...

the dvd has the director's notes over the movie, which is so informative.

I don't believe that we are 24 posts into this thread and no one has responded to my 3rd ? regarding the significant jump in Shoeless Joe's
BB cards after this movie (and Eight Men Out the same year).

I think too many of you click onto the "Bottom of Page" feature on these threads, thereby bypassing a lot of good in-between stuff.

Oh well....my recollection is that Joe Jax BB card values took a huge leap in the early 1990's. And perhaps, these movies had something to
do with it.
After all I paid only $200 for a near Ex E90-1 Joe Jax in 1987.
And, $550 for a 1915 CJ Joe Jax in VgEx in 1988.

Hey guys....take the time to read my initial post on this thread.

it is pretty obvious to me that the cards took a huge jump after the movies...it brought him to the mainstream of american culture, and out from obscurity...

They just had this on AMC last night with little tidbits during the movie.
Liotta spent a month learning to bat and throw the legit way and when he got to the set the director said it wasnt important to be "historically correct" and it would look better if he hit his own natural side. within days of realease people were up in arms about it and the director said it was the worst decision he has ever made and wish he could go back and fix it.

edit- what Jason said (Shoulda read the rest of the thread first )

He was in "The Freshman" with Marlon Brando and Matthew Broderick; was in "The Doors" as guitarist Robby Kreiger; and in an episode of "Curb Your Enthusiasm" as Pete!
