I have approximately 3,000 pre-1921 baseball related cards in my collection.
about 80% of my collection consists of 1909-1912 issues. the rest is all 1887 old judge material. I also have 30 or 40 pre 1920's baseball gloves, and about 12 pre-1920's baseballs and bats.

Dave, are you saying you have ~600 OJs? I think you need to change your handle to N172Dave

My collection on the other hand is relatively small, ~80 cards, almost all 19th century Detroit.

Best Regards,
Joe Gonsowski

Pre-1920 cards in all sports and non-sports totals just over 100,000 cards. Just counting baseball cards, around 60,000. The rest are mostly boxing, hockey and non-sports.

Been collecting for over 40 years

(EDITED)

Sorry Darren, pre-1914 would cut it down a bit since I can't add Cracker Jack and other issues between 1914 & 1920

Guys,

All right, I'll admit it I only have 4 pre-WWI cards in my collection of 200,000 cards. Yes that's right, I collect mostly the newer stuff. In my defense though, my participation in this forum is quickly changing my collecting ways.

Since the USA didn't enter WW I until 1917, couldn't we count Cracker Jacks, m101's, and such?

Hey Joe...I wish all of them were N172. a lot of the old judge cards I have are non-sport related. Just historical. I have about 103 N172 cards, and several of them are duplicates of the same cards just in deffereing conditions

I have about 300 cards pre-1914. Only four of them are 19th century, although I do have 7 or 8 Newsboy cabinets of actresses and a couple of 19th century trade cards.

I have about another 500 between 1914 and 1945.

In my "active" collection, I have about 50 postwar cards, plus complete 1977 and 1978 sets (the first cards I collected as a kid).

And I have tons and tons of crap I've accumulated over the years.

Wow. Annnd bringing up to the rear ... I have around 110 pre WWI cards in my collection, give or take. So few that I can actually still see them all at once by just spreading them out on the kitchen counter if I move a few things around.

But I like them all!!

George,

I'd love to hear more details about your collection. It sounds incredible. 60,000 pre-war baseball cards?!!! Amazing. In your 40+ years of collecting you must have added an average of over 100 pre-war baseball cards per month, every single month! In 40 years, that would still leave you shy of 50,000.

Even if you had 10 complete T206 sets and every different Old Judge player and pose known, you'd still need over 50,000 more cards. You must have dupes upon dupes upon dupes.

Which issue do you have the most dupes of? What individual card do you have the most examples of?

Scot, give me one of your mansions and I'll add you to my will.

Ryan, between 1967 and 1990 I traveled quite a bit and bought old cards in bulk and from auctions, estate sales, etc. Sometimes single purchases would consist of thousands of cards. It would take a great deal of time just to do a breakdown set by set. I have most of the cards from every reasonably obtainable set from Allen & Ginter up until the 1920s strip cards. By the way, I hate the strip cards and anytime I end up with any in multiple card lots, I get rid of them.

I'm definitely at the lower end of the quantity spectrum with 269 pre-WWI cards, over half of which are Old Judges.

Me too....Since type collecting isn't really about quantity, I bet I only have about 200-300, not including generic baseball decks, from pre-war....My total collection isn't much larger than a T206 set....

I, like many others here are/was a type collector and I have just a few hundred "vintage" cards.

A question for those whose pre-war collection ranges from 1000 and up: how many of those cards are t206's? how many are e-90's? how many 19th century?

Just checked my not so up to date spreadsheet and came up with approximately 250 pre WWI cards. Add in my few CJs, m-101s, Goudeys etc. and my entire collection is no more than 350 cards. Until now I would have guessed the number was significantly higher. (p.s. This does not include my 1972 Topps set that I bought on a whim cause I think they look cool)

I typically don't collect common players or low-grade (beaters) so my collection is way small. Probably between 75-100.
