Default That's APE to you!

Q: What's the difference between a monkey and an ape?
A: Jim will sell an ape's signature!

Much love, Jim. That is still one of the funniest threads I have ever read

Comparing this one to the one shown in Jim's thread, I think this one is a forgery. The first and third loops are way off from authentic exemplers.

If there wasn't a monkey in the photo, I would have thought it was Derek Jeter's signature.

When the thread about PSA and JSA being the greatest thing for this hobby was active, I was going to post this as an example of how ridiculous they could be. About the same time a friend sent me a link to a Hauls of Shame article about the same item listed above, as well as others that are similar. I'm not a big supporter of HOS, so I didn't post it, but it is mostly an interesting read.
This is the exact type of crap I referred to in the other thread. IMHO, stuff like this tarnishes their credibility and serves to just chip away at the public confidence.

I think their customers are happy with things the way they are: slips, slabs, re-sell value. Whatever 'confidence' that particular part of the public has of them, is in very little danger, in my opinion.

The rest of us never had any confidence in them to begin with (I do realize that "us" doesn't include most autograph collectors on this board, so please don't think I'm making assumptions), or it evaporated after our first look at a Babe Ruth autograph signed on a ball that was created after he died.

I guess you're right. It's just disappointing that the main focus seems to be resale value and not getting it right.

There are plenty of other companies that face the same choices. For instance, newspapers - the 'Seattle Times' publishes absolute crap nowadays, and has loads of typos and horrible writing that would never have made their paper twenty years ago. They grab stuff off the wire that is late, irrelevant, incorrect. Their election reporting is frequently flat-out incorrect - I had to write in and tell them how caucuses work (and they corrected their story in the online version). But if they did what it takes to 'get it right', they couldn't stay in business. I pay 75 cents every morning to read the rag while drinking my coffee, but I keep paying.

Ben,
I have no idea what the monkey's autograph looks like and I find it really hard to believe that JSA does either. I wonder how many known Monkey exemplars they have. How do I know it's the same monkey? Perhaps it's a monkey autopen? I'm sure he gets lots of requests.

Just because Travis is gone, doesn't mean the TPAs can't make themselves look foolish all by their lonesome.

Best,
Mark

Mike ...its sadly ironic that you would post that photo of Micky Dolenz the alleged drummer for "The Monkees" as Cheeta had originally auditioned for the position and at the last minute was refused , on the basis of being "Too good looking" and instead was replaced by Dolenz.

The rest as they say "is history" but he was very bitter about it and refused to sign any and all "Monkees" related items when he did the private signing and also refused to sign ANYTHING of him and Actress Marilyn Monroe posed together which today still remains a mystery.

Mr Ed or Senor Ed as he liked to be called was a very good signer through the mail but he inscribed everything "To Wilbur" which was a little annoying unless your name was Wilbur

Apparently the seller paid 195.60 for the one in question here, from timeless autograph auctions....

I thought the image of Cheetah with the pen was the JSA cert team at work...

I know there are those who hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil about the TPG system, but I am not one of them. That said, and squarely not being one who usually defends monkey business in the Hobby, I nevertheless don't see the idea of a Cheetah-signed collectible as entirely bananas. Animal performers were a part of many of our childhood entertainment memories--I mean who did not ape Cheetah's behavior at least once while playing a make-believe game of Tarzan as a kid? If we loved the movies and the performers and the animals were a huge part of it, why not pack the sharpies in the ol' Samsonite, swing into action and get one of the few animal performers capable of staying on task to mark a photo? It ain't like you're gonna get Flipper or Skippy to monkey see, monkey do for you. Obviously, there are enough gorillas in the mist with the simoleons to make the endeavor profitable--you have to admit it is a heck of a conversation piece--so why not have JSA cert the thing, especially if it could be accomplished on site. It isn't like we're asking those chimps to cert a Sal Bando...

Well, it appears this listing of the monkey autograph has been removed by eBay because there were questions concerning wheather it was authentic, or just another JSA screwup.

Too funny.....or sad.....or pitiful.

Can't decide.
