Default 1998 Topps Peyton Manning Certified Auto -- Gold vs. Bronze

Curious if anyone has any information regarding the print run of these 2 varieties (bronze & gold) and if there is any difference. I realize that Beckett lists them at the same price, but after checking pop reports, it appears there is a fairly significant disparity -- combining PSA and BGS, the number of graded copies indicate a near 10 to 1 difference:

Bronze Foil: 299 total graded (198 by BGS, 101 by PSA)
Gold Foil: 32 total graded (20 by BGS, 12 by PSA)

I went back to old sales and found that at one time PSA and BGS were not distinguishing the difference on the labels -- they simply labeled all of them as topps certified auto without noting the foil color. This iteration doesn't exist in either the PSA or BGS population reports however.

Perhaps they could have consolidated and updated their population reports, putting all of the graded copies into the bronze group, thereby inflating the numbers? This seems unlikely, however, as both PSA and BGS would have had to do the same thing. Also a check of VCP and past sales led me to check these old labels to see what foil color they actually were -- and lo and behold, I could only find 2 gold versions, while I found about 18 bronze versions.

I've tried searching for articles or something to verify the notion that the gold version may have had a much smaller print run than the bronze, but I've yet to find anything. Can anyone help?
