Am I correct that the new forum will have its own section for off topic posts?

"I think it all went bad when they took the gum out of the packs. From that point forward it all went to hell."

There is some truth to that, David. Once gun was removed from packs -- solely because greedy collectors were concerned about stains on their precious shiny cards -- our hobby changed dramatically.

Jeff - don't know about that. Only Topps and its myriad of products are allowed
to add gum to the packs. I always assumed it was to save money by not including
them. They do add them now & then to new products and all the gum is prepackaged
in plastic, so there can not be any gum stains attributed to them anymore.

Guns came in waxpacks? Whoa!! Second Amendment run amok indeed!
Jeff, Jay: Not disputing the whys and wherefores of BB card gum. I read Steve's post in a broader sense more toward an explanation of the decline of Western Civilization. Thought his timing was great. Helped avert another trainwreck. He may have saved Net54!!

Keep in mind that the absence of gum was a gradual process. When I was a kid the wad of gum in a pack of cards was huge. As the years passed it got smaller, until it disappeared altogether. It was an insidious trick perpetrated on the youth of America.

And I blame the whole thing on Millard Fillmore. It was his policies that got us into the no gum in packs mess. In fact I blame pretty much everything on Millard Fillmore.

Leon, here is the quote from the forum rules. Admittedly, I hadn't read it before but don't have a problem abiding by it.

"Politics and religion are also not permitted on the board and posts concerning this subject matter will be deleted."

However, I would expect that the rules be enforced consistently. People who post something of a religious nature shouldn't have their posts deleted while rampant political baiting is allowed to continue. Based on the stated rules, I would think most of the posts in this thread should be deleted.

Sorry but quoting scripture on the board just isn't going to be something allowed....whatever religion it might be. It's a judgement call....thanks for your understanding. BTW, you really need to put your whole name out here to participate in this thread, and yes, that goes for others that aren't well known too. best regards

Thanks for the reply but that doesn't address the issue of consistency. The "rules" say religion and politics. No other distinction is made.

It's your forum and you can do what you want, obviously. But I would hope for something better than a double standard.

Although the post was amusing, it is TRUE he played shoeless...at leastonce

"Did Shoeless Joe ever play in the majors without shoes. If he did, how did he avoid getting spiked."

That Topps gum in the late 50's, early 60's was great! I remember times as a little kid when instead of buying a pack of cards for a nickel and getting 8 cards and a stick of gum, we would use the same nickel to buy five penny packs. Only 5 cards but 5 pieces of gum happy.gif

Do you know what this country needs today?...A seven-cent nickel. Yessiree, we've been using the five-cent nickel in this country since 1492. Now that's pretty near a hundred years' daylight saving. Now, why not give the seven-cent nickel a chance? If that works out, next year we could have an eight-cent nickel. Think what that would mean. You could go to a newsstand, buy a three-cent newspaper and get the same nickel back again. One nickel carefully used would last a family a lifetime!

Let us not forget that way back when Topps' primary business was bubble gum. The cards were added to help sell the gum. Bob, you and I are the same age and I remember that gum real well. It was irresistable!

Leon,
I think Don got you on this one. I would suggest either changing the rules or enforcing them. As they are currently stated, there is no ambiguity other than in the moderation of the board. I don't mean to be giving you $#!t. I consider you a good hobby friend. I just think this stuff harms the community much more than it helps.

The best post (IMO) related to the title in this thread was posted by Patrick McHugh this morning at 5:06am. I echo his sentiments 100%.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I blame the world's problems on the Yankees and their fans.

Just the opinion of one San Francisco born Dodger fan.

. . . in today's Times there's an interesting article on Jiverly Wong. It provides some insight: had a tough time in the job market, tough time with English language, "a gun enthusiast who often spent weekends shooting targets and trying out different guns at a local sporting goods store. He had been licensed to carry handguns in NY since 1996 the Police said." "Happiness is a warm gun, momma. Bang, bang, shoot, shoot." What do hand guns have to do with sporting goods?
