Default T205 Cobb thread

Hi folks,
Last week we had an interesting thread that discussed the number of possible T206 Cobb's. If I remember correctly the total was around 68. I would like to know how many of the T205's 17 backs variations are found for the Cobb card. This could be an interesting subset to attempt to put together. I have listed the 17 different T205 backs (stolen from T205.org). Could we put together a list of known T205 Cobb backs? I will start it out with my Polar Bear.

Thanks!
Rick

I have either owned or seen the following Ty Cobbs...I track backs pretty carefully and only add to the list the backs I can confirm...

American Beauty Green
Hassan Fact. 30
Honest Long Cut
Piedmont Fact. 25
Piedmont Fact. 42
Polar Bear

I think this list is likely complete (but I have been surprised before).

Default Thanks

Thanks for the info. It is interesting that the Cobb back set may be complete at 6 of the 17 possible. I don't think that the T205 set has been as thoroughly analyzed at the T206's, but I would be interested to find out why the other brands didn't use Cobb's image.

Thanks again for everyones input.

Rick

Default Cobb backs

I had a Cobb Blank Back for many years which I listed in REA's May 2009 auction [Lot 316 - page 137] The designation was Authentic Printing Incomplete [Back]. This is a hannd cut card, considered by some to be a "Proof" and it is most likely a unique example.

If the winner of this item ever tires of it .... let me know.

I know the winner of that card and doubt you will ever see it again. I was also shocked at the hammer on that card.

At around $1500 that card should have gone for several multiples of that, imo.....I was focused on other things, too bad.

It's interesting that Cobb is unknown with a back as common as Sweet Caporal. Anyone have a theory why?

Barry,
Many commons are unavailable with Sweet Cap. Although this back is plentiful, not all cards come with that particular back. The t205s were printed in different print runs and as I complete back checklists (and Brian W. as well) you start to see patterns. The Cobb follows a pattern that a few other cards follow as well (Barger full b, bender, kroh, etc.)...it is safe to assume that these cards were on the same print run with Cobb and the sheets were printed this way. Some of the other short prints are like this. One day, I hope to have a complete enough picture of the backs to put together a comprehensive list (like Ted for the t206s) but there are still a lot of holes in the set (ask Rawn, it took us years to find the theoretical Carrigan with a Polar Bear back!).

Hope this helps a bit.

Joshua

Thanks Joshua, and I knew you would have the answer. Cobb is so plentiful in T206, due of course to his popularity. That is why it is surprising that he would have been left off the Sweet Cap sheet. I look forward to the culmination of your research on this set (I know, it never ends, but you know what I mean).
