Default 1912 Home Run Kisses

So the other day in this thread:

http://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=240980

Tim asked Rhett to start a thread about an obscure set, but he never did. Since I just got this Ables card today, I figured maybe I would. Also I have never seen a thread that was just about Home Run Kisses, so I figured I would give it a shot.

When I saw this Ables card, I started trying to figure out what to pay for it. I could find it was check listed, but I could not find any in SGC or PSA Pop Reports, but that doesn't mean anything. I also could not find another image of it anywhere, but that doesn't mean anything either. So I bid what I could guess to be a decent amount and won. I asked a PCL collector what he thought, he said he didn't know that it was anything harder than all the others to find, and he didn't know anyone specifically looking for this particular card, so now I know it is a typically difficult Home Run Kisses. So, does anyone find there are any specifically tough HRKs? And, while we are here, show your stuff! I don't have any particularly nice ones, but here are the ones I have:

My type card is nothing to write home about, but I like it because of the Collins-McCarthy advertising on the back.

Dang, Tough Crowd!

There definitely seem to be some of the 1912 HRK cards that appear less frequently than others but it can be tough to determine with a set that is as hard to find as the HRK set. I have never actively pursued them like I have with the Zeenut cards, probably due to the cost on a per item basis but do add them whenever I have the chance. I have 15 examples of the 90 in my collection but have had many opportunities to pick others but opted for other cards.

I love the look of the cards and some of the action shots are great, others are odd (pretty typical with the Zeenut/HRK cards).

Honestly, probably the most common player in the set may be Heitmuller, and he always seems to have the ad back. I wonder if he was an early season giveaway to promote the set or if they just made more of him. Very similar to the 1912 Zeenut Otto Auer card, cool catching pose but a very common card and most have the tougher to find ad back (the ad back is tough to find on non-Auer cards... Auer nearly always has it and he is common). Strange!

**A side note on Heinie Heitmuller-- He was a major star and won the 1912 PCL batting title...POSTHUMOUSLY! That is right, he had contracted typhoid fever and died on October 8, 1912. The season ended shortly thereafter and he ended up winning the batting title.

Default 1912 Home Run Kisses

The 1912 Home Run Kisses set is one of my favorites.

I have a run of catchers in the set, and believe I need only the Ralph Kreitz HRK card to complete the catcher run.

Here's the link to my webpage for the 1912 HRK catchers.

http://home.myfairpoint.net/vintagec...her/id101.html

At the beginning of the year, I was able to pick up a large photo that originated from Claude Berry's estate that was the source photo for his 1912 Home Run Kisses card.

Very nice companion piece Patrick!

Great thread, unfortunately I have never had one of these as I am worried I would start on the set and as Rhett mentioned that is an investment.

Cat
Love that one and it was my type for the set from a previous collection, along with an ad back and a black and white one. Great pose and card.

And I would be remiss if I didn't mention all of the other great cards and wonderful photo. Thanks for showing them and sharing, guys.

I know that a Ralph Kreitz HRK exists, but I never have seen his card. However, I have been told it is a catching pose.

I have been looking for a Ralph Kreitz card for a decade or more. He was my great-grandmother's neighbor.

I think you need to add Arrelanes (Arellanes) to the checklist. I don't have the card, but would really like to see it. SGC has one listed as graded.

It is there, but on the list it is the only one identified with first name as well, so you can find it in the 'F' section of your friendly Home Run Kiss supermarket. *Edited to note that Mr. Arrelanes is now residing in his rightful spot between the Anchovies and Artichokes.

I've completed about 70% of the set but that is the first time I've seen the Price card. Bancroft is tough because everyone wants that Bancroft card, not just HRK collectors. Miller...sigh. Well we all know why it is so tough, I'll have to eventually pick it up off-line or pay too much for it in an auction.

So Bob, how about showing us your 70% of the set? I know more than one is dying to see Kreitz alone, and it would be pretty awesome to have a complete showing of all these beauties!

Default 2 Ralph Kreitz HRKs in one day!

Picked up my first HRK in 2004. Found most of the catchers in a 3 year period. Figured I have been waiting at least 12 years to see the Ralph Kreitz HRK. I'm aware of at least 3 examples now, so I guess I have a little hope that I might be able to find one someday.

Thanks again for posting the Kreitz HRKs gentlemen!

Patrick

Very impressive Ron. Curious if you were able to acquire them in a group(s) or individually. I have many (not as many as you though), and I generally have to find and bid on them individually because they rarely pop up in large lots. Congrats!

Wow guys, I may have missed something when trying to check off my list (Bob, I had a hard time checking names on your photos, but for sure, thanks for posting). I think these are the only ones missing:

CARLISLE, DRISCOLL, LEVERENCZ, METZGER, PARKINS, SWAIN

And that is incredible. Way to come through, net 54, thanks to all! I never thought I would see this many HRKs all in one thread. Really awesome.

Thanks, my friend. That is an absolutely awesome thing to see. Do you guys realize how much hope you gave to some of the guys collecting out there? How often have we all lost hope on a set because you don't know if a specific card even really exists, you can't even see what it looks like? Until last year, so many doubted the 1911 Zeenut Bohen until HA had that one in their auction (heck, people were even questioning if it was Bohen or Bohne, but now we know). This all started with me picking up the Ables card, and there is no information on it, no pop reports, no images, nothing I could find. So after getting everyone to post, I am guessing that these were all printed in basically the same numbers, but due to player popularity, certain players that were less popular with the kids that collected these, are now the more scarce cards. I know when I was a kid in the 70s and collecting cards, if it wasn't a superstar, or a Dodger, I didn't want it. I doubt kids in 1912 were much different, and certain players just did get kept that much. Thanks to all for showing your stuff!
