Just got my Oct 6th issue of SCD and saw an announcement that Keith Olbermann will be writing an occasional column about vintage cards. The first one is scheduled for the Oct 13th issue, and will be about the N690 Kalamazoo Bats.

Yesterday, Keith bid Phil Rizzuto a happy birthday on his show (he's 89, about a month older than my dad). For me, Mr. Olbermann's show is can't miss TV, and not just for the baseball touches.

I agree - "Countdown" is one of my favorite of all shows, not just news shows. There is a lot of very subtle humor, and of course the bb references are great too!

Will look forward to seeing what he writes for SCD. I wonder if it will increase interest in vintage noticealby. There will surely be those that read his column, at least initially, because of the author and not so much the content. But the content may grow on a few of them!

Increase interest?? I hope not!! Isn't there enough people already going after vintage baseball items?? I mean prices are rising on almost everything and you want MORE competition?? The only way that is good is if you are planning on cashing out your collection.

the Topps Turkey Red, Cracker Jack, 206 and 205 issues of the last 3-4 years have drawn more people than you think into vintage cards. The inserts/buy backs they did spur peoples interest. I also think the Heritage sets have brought some newer people into 1950's collecting. I'm fine with the 50's people but stay out of vintage everyone........shiny stuff is much better...

Catch Countdown from time to time. If I can filter out all of his political blather, I can sometimes take him. I know it's not a hardcore news show and more Op-ed but he's farther left than O'Reilly is right. JMO.......

Sorry guys, but KO's show is "way, way out".....beyond "Left" field. In fact they should
play Twilight Zone background music when he starts going off on one of his conspiracy
episodes.

And, why isn't he writing a column for OLD CARDBOARD ?

Who reads SCD anyhow, anymore?

MVSNYC,

Keith probably has a secret ebay account but he still uses the old one he used to use a while back.

He used to post to this forum but I haven't seen anything written by him for ages now.

He is funny and intelligent, but his politics are serious (thank God). He says some things that have needed saying for a long time. He even dropped in a subtle allusion to John Cleese's "Fawlty Towers" yesterday.

He is always interesting, often humorous, and not, in my mind, out in "left" field. Just because he has the guts to say what sometimes needs to be said, no matter how controversial, doesn't make him a pariah. I have always enjoyed him, going back to his ESPN days. Yes he can be a tad arrogant but he is a breath of fresh air these days.
With regard to his articles, he also wrote some early articles for VBCC including articles in the find of previously uncatalogued T206s and uncatalogued variations of Obaks, not to mention the whole T206 Doyle NY fiasco and why he doesn't believe in grading companies. Interesting reading...

Dan is CORRECT!

I don't even want to line by bird cage with the rag as I don't want to torture the bird with that "crappy" magazine. I do hope someone (or I will get someone to do it) will publish on this Forum the articles.

I think Keith is great. I never miss Countdown and he is made a great deal of himself from his humble beginnings writing for Baseball Magazine to this.

I think Keith Olbermann is, first and foremost, a political commentator who does a very effective job of providing counterpoint to the conservative commentators who seem to predominate talk-media. His show is not balanced (all the guest pundits share his views), but I don't think it pretends to be. I think the sports coverage, while excellent, is clearly secondary and the show-biz coverage is for laughs. Clever and entertaining (imo), I wouldn't miss his show. Mark

Dare I say I am a subscriber to the SCD publication and Old Cardboard. First it was bad enough that I have to look at Mr. Mint's mug in each issue and now possibly Olbermann's political views.

Have to say I love his baseball talk and perspective on the game as well as the other sardonic blurbs on his show. He knows his baseball and his cards!

However, when it comes to his politics I would rather watch the greastest newcaster ever rather than listen to his one sided comments. Sorry Keith.

Cue the music Pennsylvania Ted

Just a reminder that Mr. Mint said he will never attend another National. That includes walking the floor Al.

edited for spelling

The two people I always watch on the news networks are Olberman and Lou Dobbs. Dobbs is the absolute best. He has balanced point-counter point people and he refuses to use politcally correct language, especially when it comes to the issue of illegal aliens. He is also a great champion of the middle class and boarder security. If it wasn't for him, I would have never known that Bush allowed port security to be sold to Dubai, a country known to support terrorism. I never heard about this on any other network or show.

Olberman is on the far left wing of the political spectrum and uses the show to promote his agenda. His abysmal ratings show it doesn't have much of a following.
Hopefully he will stick to cards in SCD.

he's right in the pack with the rest of MSNBC. Not a highly watched network. Not a good decision for the faltering General Electric when they hooked that one up.......

I definitely like Olbermann's wit. He and Dennis Miller and other guys of the like have great delivery and ability to land great tongue in cheek stuff. Just don't agree with his politics.

I guess I'm one of the few here that became a fan of Olbermann as a result of his political commentary and not as a result of his sports or card articles. I've actually never read any of the card-related things he's written, so I'm looking forward to reading his stuff.

Keith and I have been casual friends for over 20 years, since he was a sports reporter up in Croton-on-Hudson. While I only watch his show occasionally I love his irreverent humor; I think he is extremely bright and I do share his liberal politics. I know he gets badly beaten in the ratings every night by that O'Reilly creep but that is the result of America being so conservative right now. And of course he has a liberal slant; I'm guessing that is what they are paying him for. NBC already has Brian Williams to report the news; Keith's job is to turn it upside down.

SCOTT I.

Old buddy.....I couldn't have said it better myself.

O'Reilly's viewership is in the MILLION's.........while.....

KO barely has 200,000 (he is the bottom feeder in the Cable Ratings war).

At this rate, he will be off soon and perhaps devote more time to sports. But....
hasn't he been on several sports shows in the past and they all "bombed-out" ?

Maybe they were "bombed-out" by the same "aliens" he thinks blew up the World
Trade Center buildings ?

There both showmen. Take them both with a grain of salt. I am not looking for anyone of the boob tube to tell me what to think. If you regard it as pure entertainment they are both easy to take or leave!

I have an acquaintance who demolishes buildings as a profession. I could write
several pages here, relating all he has told me regarding the absolute absurdity
and erroneous "Bull--S" these "conspiracy kooks" have spewed in their attempts
to convince sane-minded people of how these buildings went down.

But, I'll limited this to one paragraph......1st, he stated when you employ explosives
to demolish a structure, it occurs from the ground level....up. The kooks claim that
explosions were visible in the lower levels of the Twin Towers (TT). These were the
resulting explosions of power transformers, fire extinguishers, and other similar devices
exploding as the fires spread and as the upper levels (DUE TO GRAVITY) came crashing
down on top of the lower levels. And, why did this happen....he went on to say that TT
fire walls were not asbestos (the only material that would have inhibited the massive fire
damage). This caused the steel structure to start to warp due to the high temp. gene-
rated by the fires; therefore, weakening the stuctural integrity of the TT's. And, indeed
he proved this to me with still photos from videos of the TT's prior to their collapse.
These photos clearly show the South Tower starting to lean just before it went down.
Then followed by the North Tower leaning several degrees and then collapsing.

I wont bore you with anymore details....besides the real facts just confuse the "kooks".

Ted- I'm missing something. What does the demolition of buildings have to do with Keith? Does he have some theory of how the towers fell that I am not aware of? Just curious.

that was a response to my tongue-in-cheek comment about the conspiracy theorists who think WTC was blown up by the government. I don't believe that by the way........

Don't move to Latvia......not many vintage cards....

Plus...what ever happened to the Barbara Streisands and George Clooney's who were going to leave the country if Bush was re-elected. Sadly....they're still here.......

Latvia is just my metaphor for the world coming to an end. Same with Chuck E. Cheese. When I see something that signals the demise of popular culture, I usually respond: "why don't they just open another Chuck E. Cheese?" It's just my own thing.

Sitting @ my desk in Atlanta. At worst he's a Secular "Regressive" and a great entertainer. As they say he calls it as he sees it. Not everyone's gonna see it the same. No sacred cows with him. At the end of the day his job is to stir it up and it appears he does a good job. It's all about perspective.
