Default M101-5/M101-4 article: call for information-- LAST appeal for info

Posted By: Tim Newcomb

Hello all! Todd Schultz and I are currently hard at work on a detailed article for Old Cardboard on these great sets. This board has been a great resource for hobby research projects, and we’re hoping you’ll all want to contribute to this one.

We are not doing a full-scale population survey, but we are trying to puzzle out a number of M101-style obscurities and anomalies, and it would really help if you could report any holdings in the cards listed below.

________________________________________

1.
Do you have any of the following name/number combinations? If so, please let us know, and also tell us what backs your examples have.

M101-5
#12 Beals Becker
#12 Lute Boone
#23 Forrest Cady
#23 Mordecai Brown
#59 Ray Fisher
#68 Geo. Gibson
#97 John Lavan or Lavin
#185 Clarence Walker (what team is listed?)
#186 Bobby Wallace
#186 Zack Wheat

M101-4
#8 H. D. Baird (what position is listed?)
#68 Geo. Gibson
#77 Roy Hartzell
#168 Oscar Stanage (only the waist-length portrait pose, not the catching pose)
#183 Clarence Walker (what team is listed?)
__________________________________________________ _______

2.
Can you give us a list of the numbers and names of all your cards with the following backs?

Famous and Barr
Standard Biscuit
Burgess-Nash
Altoona Tribune
Gimbel’s
Ware’s
Successful Farming
________________________________________________

Thanks so much to everyone for looking!

I have #186 Bobby Wallace. It has a Standard Biscuit back. I have about 20 M101-4/5 cards total. The Wallace is my only Standard Biscuit. I have none of the other backs that you mentioned.

Tim,

I will try to get you a list later this evening or this weekend with another post, but I have 151 cards from this set with various backs. Not many rarities (sounds redundant). I have the # 23 Brown wit a Famous and Barr back. A large number of the cards I have from this set have the Famous and Barr backs.

Tim,
I really happy to see that you are undertaking this. I have a George Gibson, number 68, blank backed. I don't collect the different backs but I have a Gimbels large block Adams #1 and in Gimbels italics I have both McInnis #117 (M101-4)and Rousch #146 (both). I know you didn't ask but I also have a Strunk (M101-4) with the Indianapolis Brewing Co. back. Best of luck.
Mark

Hi Tim,

I have 3 M101-5 cards with Famous & Barr backs.
#67 Gus Getz
#86 Joe Jackson
#101 Duffy Lewis

I recently sold 58 others. I still have the information on them if the person who bought them doesn't respond to you.

Glad to help,
Scott.

I have 2 #68 George Gibson cards. One is a Sporting News Back and one is a blank back. When I bought the blank back it was listed as M101-5, but I obviously have no way of proving whether it is or isn't.

Regards,

Richard.

Tim,

Will you be trying to explain why on earth Frank Chance is included in this set -- and as a Cub???? Also, I've always wondered why Bresnahan was included, and why he wasn't pulled early like Wallace. He was out of the majors before the set was issued.

We really appreciate the responses. If anyone has scans available that they don't mind sharing, please feel free to e-mail them to Tim or me.

Brian (and others), feel free to expand your descriptions to include any and all backs, and differentiation among Gimbel backs would be appreciated.

Paul, we wonder about Chance too. There is also another player who made it all the way to m101-4 without having played after 1914!

Thanks gang, for renewing the thread (although one of these recent posts really belongs in the BST, not here.

We are still looking especially for info on Burgess-Nash, Famous & Barr, Herpolsheimer, and Ware's backs. If you haven't reported them yet, please let us know--

Tim

It looks like you collect Wheat with different backs. Probably the toughest back is the Everybody's.....and for some reason I have it with Zach on the front....go figure...
