Default 1936 Chicago White Sox...Les Rock

Posted By: first post...

Hi,
This player had one official at bat in 1936 and that was it. I came across two really nice signed b&w postcards in his CWS uniform but with no photographer credit. Any value in the fact that he is barely ahead of Moonlight Graham in playing time? The seller at this antique store thinks they are worth a lot more than I'm willing to pay. Thanks for any opinions...

Great name!

Without seeing scans of the cards it is difficult to estimate value.

I'll try to get scans next week but they are nice looking b&w's. Brace or Burke? I'm not a PC guy so really don't know.

There are plenty of cards (as well as photos) of players who, although they made it on to a MLB roster, never got a chance to field, pitch nor did they ever hit the ball. I formerly collected these cards, actually, I still do.

But your guy does not make the grade because he has actual experience (and it is a photo). Larry Fritsch produced a set of cards representing "One Year Winners" including these players.

There is one pitcher who I have identified that in his first game, he injured himself warming up, and never did get to throw the ball in a Major League game. No card exists of him though, only photos.

Edited to add:

Ok, here is one for you trivia buffs: Name the player who appeared in 91 games yet met the criteria which I specified above.

Serious hint: #407 in Topps 1975 set.

Oh, your guy has postcards, sorry, reading is my second language.

Ok this is for serious trivia buffs:

Same game:

"made it on to a MLB roster, never got a chance to field, pitch nor did they ever hit the ball."

Yet this guy if a HOFer. Name him.

Please note: trick questions are fair game for serious trivia buffs.

Answer tomorrow, unless you beat me to it.

Hin

#407 in the 1975 set is Herb Washington. Was he a pinch runner?

Herb Washington only pinch ran. He didn't bat.

A Les Rock signed pc is worth something, not a lot. If the seller is asking $100 per, it's too much.

Gilbert

I believe the Hall of Famer is basketballer Bill Sharman, who I understand was on the bench when Bobby Thomson hit his home run to win the pennant. Is my recollection accurate?

Wow, you guys are unbelievable! That was fast. Bill Sharman was the one I knew about, but I am unsure about Elway. Was he on a Major League roster?

And I don't know about Thompson's HR, but he got thrown out of his first ML game when the ump cleared the bench for excessive heckling.

Walter Alston (baseball HOFer) came very close. One AB, in which he KO'd, so he didn't hit the ball. In the field, as a 1st baseman, had 2 total chances with 1 error! That's when he decided to manage.

as soon as michael jordan gets into the basketball hall of fame (i think he has a chance?)he will be the answer to this trivia question. he played in the cross town classic(SOX/CUBS) in the mid 90's b4 inter league play became a reality. so he was put on the major league roster for at least this game.
