Default 1970-71 Topps Super "Proofs"

Posted By: Chris Counts

I was wondering if anyone out there collects or knows anything about these cards. I started collecting the '70-71 Supers off eBay, and while I found myself often getting outbid on the regular cards, I have been able to pick up about about 20 of these for a song. One eBay seller said only 50 were made of each player. Curiously, about a quarter of the cards are as thick as the regular set and have regular backs but square corners. The others are thinner with blank backs. I really like the stripped down design and sharp, colorful pictures ...

They look like cut-outs. Are the edges really slightly wavy like cut-outs, or is it just my eyes deceiving me? Also, what size are the cards?

I've got a Bob Gibson like that.

It's the same pose as the regular Super, but square corners.

I got it on EBAY for $10 or so a couple years ago.

They said it was a "Proof".

I'm not sure if they knew what it was.

They are same postcard size as the regular "Super" cards ... the edges are as straight as any "Super" card, but many of the cards have slight print marks around the edges, although others don't ...

I bought a large group of these back in the early 80's at a show in anaheim
didn't pay much for them & recall they were slow sellers
Anytime the public knows little about a issue, the tuffer it is to sell that item

They certainly seem plentiful for proofs. I have one or two but they are always available either on Ebay or at shows. I assume they were rejects that someone saved from the trash.
