Hey I'll miss Teddy on the board -- he was fun to listen to; and because we've been friends for a long time -- I could picture him speaking as he was typing.

So, for the next 72 hours -- can we put a hold on any attack dogs -- except for a thread I'll create next; which will be -- the anything goes thread (O/T):

Let's see if we can actually talk about vintage BB cards and memorabilia for a whole weekend.

The next thread will be for "other subjects".

You can't have a request for civility and then say it's an anything goes thread...you need to start a separate thread where we don't necessarily need to be civil.

for long threads that devolve into a graded vs. slab debate. This is how it works: When one of these threads gets started, the first person to notice the following 6 words in the posts wins an 87 Topps Don Mattingly card (I can supply many of these):

hahaha Chad. Great great choice of words. Reminds me of playing Buzzword Bingo in meetings at work. Lay out your card with the corporate lingo of the day, and listen while you and someone else try for the first bingo. Hee.

Good words for my company:

Margin hit
Reach out
Circle back (although this one has gone dormant)
Utilize (only allowed when "use" would work perfectly well - drives me nuts)
Communicate (as above, only for when "tell" would have worked)
"The Business" (as used by the IT folks when explaining what everyone else has to do because the software can't)
At the end of the day
That said or Having said that
Blocking and tackling (when the speaker means we have to get back to basics)

And of course, the center square: Going forward. At my brother's company, for awhile he took vis-a-vis as his center square and cleaned up while that was the latest "in" phrase.

Sorry for the OT - but Chad's awesome post reminded me of this.

I will be willing to donate my (and yes I do actually own one) 84 Donruss Don Mattingly. Its about a grade 8. Not slabbed. Speaking of Mattingly, does anyone remember the book written by Kit Kieffer and Paul Green, from back in about 1990 called, "The Top 100 cards to own". ? They had the Mattingly card rated higher than the 1914 Cracker jack. Joe Jackson, 52 topps mantle, and the E90-1 Mike Mitchell, and it was ahead of about 80 other pre war cards. I had that book back when I was just geting started in this game. It even outranked the T214 Mike Donlin. Anyone recall that book. ? I haven't looked at that book for 15 years, but I vividly recall it.

That is so funny. We had a CEO a few years ago that always used the term "vis a vis". On our con calls we would play a game to see who could pick how many times he would say it. I don't think the winner got anything but we all laughed every time he said it. Also, not sure if this one was thrown in but we can't forget "at the end of the day".....As far as civility goes...I can pretty much guarantee there is no one on the board that would like more of that than I would. best regards

The phrase that always makes me laugh is "net net". I also like when I'm told to take "ownership" of my work. Other than that, we mostly just curse like sailors. We're really a throwback brokerage firm when it comes to the political incorrectness of our speech. One day we'll get sued and we'll never be able to laugh again...

I am really not sure why this topic triggered this memory but when my daughter went to college they used to play the drinking game "Hi Bob" They would watch reruns of the Bob Newhart Show and anytime someone would say " Hi Bob" they would take a drink of beer ---well every time I watch that show I am amazed at how much beer that was!!!!!!!!

HR - yeah, that's what we do (or have done in the past sometimes). Two people each make out a bingo card with the buzzword. Before the meeting they each get a copy of the other's card so you can see who's winning.

If it's a full day or multiday management or sales kumbaya, you can go 4x4 or 5x5, or 3x3 for shorter, and I've even gone 2x2 but with a center square so there are 5 squares total. Usually play for lunch or a beer or something.

Didn't mean to derail the thread, but I have to say I'm getting some awesome ideas for it!

My wife always chuckles at baseball sayings One she finds funny is "Can of Corn". I've tryed explaining.....

Edited to add: The Twins TV broadcaster is Burt Blyleven. A blooping, curving, lazy, hit over the head of the first baseman, and landing in front of the right fielder is called a "Duck Fart". My wife does not get that one.

I used to play "Hi Bob." It's a gulp of beer for every "Bob" and a full beer (you can play finish your beer too) for every "Hi Bob." I can remember when Howard would come over. You could get pretty drunk very fast.
