Are you talking about the small (T-206) size cards or are you talking about a small number of cards in the set (like 12 versus 50)? Most of the Churchman golf sets have a have a small (T-206 size) card set that consists of 50 cards or a larger (1933 Goudey size) set that consists of 12 cards. Do you want a specific player to be in the set, like Bobby Jones, Walter Hagen or Tom Morris or does it not matter? The 1927 Churchman Famous Golfers set of 50 cards (T-206 sized) is always a good starter set. What condition to you want to collect the set in? Are you going to keep it ungraded or do you want a PSA/SGC graded set?

I agree with Jason.

The 1927 Churchman set is a great set.
The set also happens to have one of my favorite Bobby Jones cards in it.

If you like real-photo cards (like I do) - actual photgraphs, not printed photographs - the 1928 Milhoff set or the 1926 Lambert & Butler sets are great.

I like the art in the 1930 Wills Famous Golfer set

As far as the premier vintage golf set (I could be wrong calling it that - but I will anyway).... Very difficult, but just awesome is the 1900 Copes set

You can't go wrong with any of those. Find the one that appeals to you most and jump in.

Regards,
Joe

Knowing you collected E94's... I assume you are looking for something tough, but doable. Personally I despise the cartoonish sets from Churchman, so I would say to avoid those. Maybe you could do both of the 12 card Famous Golfers large series...or as Joe said the Cope set is tough and desirable. Also maybe the Ogden's Guinea Gold subset would be good to start with.

The Guinea Golds are tough in any grade, and many are re-colored...be careful and just purchase PSA or graded cards.

The 27 churchman is a great set, the larger size series of 12 from 27 and 28 (which is actually the 2nd series from 1927 famous golfers) are VERY TOUGH and usually quite expensive. The Jones and Hagen and Morris will set you back a LOT from these sets.

Keep the questions coming, Jason is also a great source of knowledge...

Thanks JW

Dave

thanks for all the comments -- ya I was referencing a smaller set size - less than 30ish I guess....
sounds like the 27 churchmans are a popular choice -- never have been real excited about black and white cards but they are good looking ... not too many fans out there for the 31 churchmans ??

thanks for the comments
Darrell

Darrell,

The 1931 Churchman's are a bit too cartoony for my liking.
I am sure I will buy and own a few at some point...
but the set isn't as exciting (to me) as the other stuff out there.

I will say though - if you are looking for a color set - it is a pretty good one with a great roster of players within the set.

If you like the artwork - go for it.

good luck - and post your cards when you dive in!

Darrell,

I would add that the 1931 Churchman smalls are far more difficult to obtain in NM-MT to Mint status. Just check out the PSA pop report to total graded with 15.6% PSA 8s for the 1931 Churchman smalls vs. the 1927 Churchman smalls at 30% respectively. The 1931 small set is more difficult in high grade for some reason and it is more elusive in my opinion than its 1927 counterpart.

You can't go wrong with any of the Churchman sets to get started in vintage golf cards. Those sell the most often on eBay and at auction. The Churchman large sets are tougher though so I recommend starting with the small sets to have more fun at first.

Enjoy!

Mike
