Kit Young is a great guy. He is still in business (i get his catalog). I always know I can call him and iron out a fair deal. You should reach out to him and tell him the story; i bet he will get a kick out of it.

Default Mantle/Ashburn 1956 Topps

I collect 19th century items, but love to find unusual Ashburn related items. I thought Mantle collectors kit be interested in this miscut, but matching Mantle/Ashburn cards. (Interestingly Robin Roberts was the card below)

It's so hard to find a nice '65, could not resist. One of my favorite Mickeys. I am generally not a corner guy, but the gem mt corners of this card are really striking in hand.

Noticed that the PSA 6 and 4 52 Topps Mantles that ended in the MH auction last night fell well below current trends......was it their centering, or were they missed opportunities.

Got this for fifty bucks. What do you all think of this 59 card? Seems way under value compared to the other ones, but it could be because it's not a real photo and it's a highlight card?

Anything Mantle is nice imo. As far as the $50 price goes, I really have no idea but it does look to be in great shape. If you wanted it, checked out others first, then purchased this one, I'd say you did well.

Default All Star Photo Pack Mantle

Now that the ebay auction is over I was wondering if any of our Net 54 Mantle collectors could offer any information on these items. Enclosed is the ebay link of the concluded auction. Did the usual search, A. H results/Google/various collector`s sites,Mantle Master set etc. but could only find one result from 10 years back. I`ve seen 3 on ebay over the last year or so with prices all over the place. Thanks again for any info on this cool period Mantle piece.

I am not 100% certain about the year as I believe the one I got was described as coming from a different year, but I am far from an expert on the years for these premiums. I don't think this one is particularly rare though and think that the price was pretty fair given the condition. Still an awesome piece. Here is mine along with a couple of team issued greeting cards I may or may not have posted previously:

Sorry about the late reply to this, somehow I missed it last month.

SCD lists the year of the All-Star photo pack as 1954. That photo was also issued in the 1956 Yankees photo pack set. I've attached a photo of it from the Yankees photo set.

Nice pick ups Mike, and the image and clarity on the 57 Mantle is outstanding. Working some deals for a few Mantles as we speak - fingers crossed.

Thanks KC! Best of luck to you on acquiring the ones you are after. Would love to see the new adds when you finalize the deal.

Default 1967 Topps

I needed this for my set, and took advantage of the EBay $15 off $75 offer a couple weeks ago. I'm going to crack it out to go in the binder, but it was the nicest 4 I could find.

From the '51 Season. No. 7 is Bill Cerv. Tough scan, and couldn't get all in picture, nor get size down to allowed very easy.

Great pic!

As you likely haven't seen this pic, being new here, here is a pic of my Great Uncle Same with Mickey Mantle and Dizzy Trout taken at the 1958 World Series.

My Uncle's Sams friend, Norm is closest to Mick and Dizzy Trout is the second guy.

Welcome to the site. Best one around, imo.

Dale, that's a marvelous treasure, bro. So happy for you to have that. I remember when you first posted it, and definitely am glad to see it again.

In 1971, a dear family friend gave me a black 'n white photo he received from his friend, Leo Best, who was a guest with his wife at the dinner table, where Yankees' owner Dan Topping, and some of his players, were dining. With the presence of Mr. Topping, I would surmise it was taken at the swanky hotel the Yanks stayed at during spring training.

Maybe I can try to load it up one day. Most people don't care for shots of players in their civilian clothes, but it's such a great conversation piece. I mean, there the guy is, seated at the table with his wife, conversing with Dan Topping. Around the table, smiling at the camera are:

Yogi Berra, Billy Martin, and Mickey Mantle. Billy is really smirking; no surprise there. There's another player I cannot identify. My friend was having trouble too; perhaps he was a reserve player. Which then makes for a good reason to load 'er up on Net54. We got some mid-50s Yankee fans who are great "EAGLE EYES". One or more of them could identify the man. We really have a lot of guys who truly enjoy being helpful.

Take care, Dale, have a happy new year, and some time please tell me about your 1952 Topps set building.

All the best, bro. ---Brian Powell

Default Mantle 1955 Exhibit A MUTOSCOPE CARD Postcard back!!

Hi Guys:

Not a Mick collector, or a graded collector but rather an Exhibit collector. Just got a 1955 Exhibit Postcard card of the much rarer version with the words A MUTOSCOPE CARD on the reverse.

This would be a nice companion piece to whomever won the other version in the LOTG auction a few months back. Anyone here??

http://loveofthegameauctions.com/195...-LOT12677.aspx

Lots of collectors do not even know these exist because the TPG's do not know about/list this variation in the Pop reports or Registries.

Take a look.

OH, YEAH, and WHY IS THIS A 40?????

Fred

Default The official Mickey Mantle Pickup Thread. All Mick, all the time!

I've been lurking on this thread for a long time and have never posted anything. Since I don't have a recent Mantle pickup, I'll post my original one - this '56.

Circa 1990 at a now long-gone card shop in the mall in Hickory, NC. I walked in and gasped as I saw this beauty under the glass. I was 13 at the time and carried my cards with me on trips (this was to visit my grandparents and my cousin, so I must have had the box of good stuff in the car...) Wound up trading nearly everything I had with me that day (including a nice '61 Mantle #300 and an '89 UD Griffey RC...) but I walked out with it. Still the key card in my modest collection nearly 30 years later. It's only about VG, though might grade lower technically due to the paper loss on the bottom right corner. Other than that though it's got bright colors, near perfect centering, and no creases. Gray back...

This card has survived all of the "holder generations", incidentally. It originally lived in an inch thick lucite screw down, currently lives in a vintage sleeve and a toploader in my closet.

For my money, this is one of The Mick's best cards other than his rookies. Colorful, from an awesome set design, and of course from his triple crown year. I figure mine is not worth more than about $300 or so, but I wouldn't trade it for the world!

Great story and awesome card! That 1956 Topps Mantle is one of my favorite Mantle cards ever. Amazing how you got that when you were 13 and it still looks like it is in decent condition.. I would forever hold on to that card. The cards I have from when I first started collecting didn't survive the card binders, so they all don't look too good.. lol. Thanks for sharing your card and story.

Thanks. Remember I was 13 in the prime of the Beckett era. Baseball cards were front-page news. This card has never spent more than 30 seconds or so not in some type of case...at least while I've had it. :-)

John, your post of your 1956 Topps Mantle prompts me to post mine, which I got out of a 5-cent wax pack in 1956, a few months before I turned 13 in November of that year. I know that this is a favorite Mantle card of many collectors, but truth be told, I have always liked the Mick's 1957-1960 Topps issues, which I also got as a kid, much better. Heck, I even like his 1955 Bowman card better. Although I like the background action on the 1956 card, there is something about Mantle's facial that just doesn't do it for me.

I own a 1964 Mantle. His arms look massive in the photo. Is there a better card that displays Mantles pythons?

My July bulk submissions (received just prior to National) just popped early and had these in it. A couple are doubles (the PSA 7 Blast and PSA 7 1961 Team, I think). Will have to figure out why two got factory miscuts. They looked fine to me. Will have to resubmit the 1968. Was very iffy on cracking the slab on that one, but YOLO.

Hi everyone
First post here! Bought this on eBay the other day. Love the image and size of the card. Does anyone know what his first card was?

Nice pickup. His 1951 Bowman is considered his first card... there is also the 1950 Dairy Lea reflector which is one of his earliest, but it's not a card.

The thought on this Wheaties premium is that it was actually produced in 1952, but as you can see it still gets marked as 1951. It's from a series that Wheaties was testing out to see if they wanted to use these to promote their brand, but ultimately they decided against using Mickey (or maybe Mickey said you can't use my image).

Brian, I thought the consensus was actually 1953?

If these haven't shipped yet, you may want to call them and get the Bazooka in an authentic holder? I have called them once grades pop to make that request and they are always willing to accommodate (I usually indicate that authentic is fine on the forms so it's just a point of clarifying).

The N0 is holdered as Authentic. It confused me at first because it's an N-code, but it means they holdered it as Authentic. I could have had them holder the 1961 AS and the 1962 Switch Hitter, but I'd rather get them back raw and resubmit next time. They don't charge for the "factory miscut" determination, or the MINSIZ, so that's three that have to get sent back another time.
Here are the two they listed as miscut:

Weird sales on this card. A 6 sells for $200 May of 2017, another sells for $245 in April. Then a month ago, PWCC auctions a 9 which only achieves $102. PWCC listing doesn't mention Mickey Mantle in title or text. Heck of a steal for the winner of that one.
I put in a placeholder bid to keep it on my eBay homepage, but would have bid much higher if I didn't already have one at PSA (it got an 8). PWCC really screwed the pooch by not listing "Mantle," but I've heard the consignor gets to see drafts of the listings and confirm what they look like.
