54 Topps Graybacks

which was about '52 Topps Graybacks (Series #3, Card #'s 131-190) got me wondering if other Grayback variations exist.

Old Cardboard Issue #12 (Summer 2007) has a great article on Topps issues form the 50's. It reaffirms what Ted Z mentioned about the scarcity of Series #3 Graybacks and also mentions that the '54 & '56 Topps had Grayback variations. The article also indicates these were thought to be printed in Canada and that the '56 Topps were equally as common as the normal white cardstock.

Does anyone know if the '54 Topps Graybacks (Series #1, cards 1-50)are scarce relative to the normal issue?

The 1954 Topps Gray backs are very tough....but, not as tough as the 1952 T mid-series Gray backs.

I have only one 54T as a type card, Eddie Lopat. If I can find it I'll post a scan.

'56 Topps is another story -- I have dozens of graybacks, in fact my high series is exclusively gray. Interestingly, cards numbered 1 and 2, the league presidents, one is white and the other gray.

I have the 52 and 54 sets done, but had no grays. Did get a 54 recently as an example, # 30, Mathews. Would still like to get a 52 gray for inclusion with that set if anyone has one for sale

Seems like I recall a complete grayback 54 Topps set advertised set in some auction in last couple of years. But I may be mistaken.

But I have seen some auction descriptions stating the graybacks are of Canadian issue.

I've known about the 1954 Topps greybacks for quite awhile. They were mentioned in Dick Gilkeson's 1989 Variation manual. I believe they were issued in Canada, and are quite rare. I think from searching hundreds of 1954s #d from 1-50, that maybe 1% are greybacks. I also believe the 1952 Topps greybacks were issued in Canada. I'm still looking for a greyback of #38 Eddie Stanky if anyone has one. Randy

I have three of the 54 gray backs and they are extremely difficult to find. The SCD catalog prices them at 5K for the set of 50.
