T206 Polar Bear Backs

I have seen alot of talk lately about the T206's on this board, so if I have missed a post discussing my forthcoming question I apologize. I was wondering if someone here could provide me with some information concerning the Polar Bear Backs of T206. How rare are they? Were they only on certain cards? Do they command a premium to other backs?

As you can tell from my question, I am a Pre-War card novice, but I am wanting to get more involved in this sector of the market. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Polar Bears get a slight premium because they are a fairly common. The hard part is finding them in NM condition because they came in packs with loose tobacco so they are subject to staining.

There is an excel spreadsheet that is available that breaksdown all the players and what backs they came in.

Polar Bear backs generally command a 25 to 30% premium over a more common back.

Two years ago, we ran a survey on the POLAR BEAR T206's and there are at least 252 cards
confirmed with this back.

Hi Phil,

About 6 months ago I was inspired by the T206 subsets T-Rex Ted has put together and I decided to pursue an all Polar Bear subset. I'm currently at 220 of what I believe to be 251 (see list below). I would say that overall, for low to mid-grade, they are only slightly more difficult to obtain than run-of-the-mill Piedmont or Sweet Cap backs.

High grade, like the Cravath that Jamie posted, are extraordinary because PB's were packaged in loose tobacco (so they are often stained or have specks of tobacco on them). Of course, Demmitt StL and O'hara StL can only be found with Polar Bear backs and will run $1000 ea for a Poor grade!

Out of the 251, the only one that I have not seen listed (ebay, BST, dealer sites, auction sites, etc) is McGraw Portrait with Cap. Some that I have only seen listed once or twice include Dorner, Fiene, Howell Portrait, Nicholls.

I'm currently at 242 of the 251 and I haven't found any additions to the list. I still have not come across McGraw Portrait with Cap. And I'm starting to think I may have mis-marked Howell Standing as Howell Portrait, so Howell Portrait may be a no-print.
