Default January 2020 Pick Ups

My first pickup of the new year is a relatively scarce program for the first Major League exhibition games played at Hiram Bighorn Stadium in Puerto Rico. The condition obviously has a few issues but the scarcity of this program rendered that mute for me.

Default 1921 Yankees

A rare Daily News original photo of NYY. The player first on the back row left is Tom Connelly, who got into 5 games in 1920-21. This is likely his only image as a Yankee. His last game was 7.4.21 and the photo was published 7.7.21.Also scarce images of Mitchell and Piercy.

Default Mail Day!

Picked up this AWESOME Tris Speaker model from the Sanford Bat Company.
I can't find very much information on the Sanford Bat Company, but I know they are from Sanford, Maine; so this is a must have for my Maine collection.

Totally beat up, but that is the best kind!

I'm from Mount Morris NY. I just picked up this 1940s/1950s Mount Morris baseball uniform. It's not a high ticket item, but it holds a lot of meaning to me and brings back many fond memories.

Default January 2020 pickups

Happy New Year to everyone on net54!
I added a couple of small but fun pickups last night which I think are pretty cool.
1) A baseball youth medal from 1928 that honors a NJ boy's unique pitching accomplishment of hurling back-to-back consecutive no-hitters like Johnny Vander Meer.
Ironically, Vandy hailed from NJ (Midland Park) as well and was a youth pitching star during the same era. Vandy hurled several no-hitters during his youth, but not back-to-back. Unique & cool!

2) Two St. Louis Browns ticket stubs and ticket envelope to the game played on July 19th, 1953 @ StL.
This was Bobo Holloman's final game in a season that he pitched a no-hitter in his first ML start.
Two months later he was sent back to the minors, never returning to the bigs ever again.

Bobo Holloman has always been interesting to me personally. He is arguably the least likely pitcher to hurl a no-hitter, but he did it.
It's also important to note that HOF pitcher Satchel Paige also got his 32nd career save in this game.
Because of his late career entrance into the ML because of the color barrier Ol' Satch only had 33 career saves.
Pretty cool graphics on the Brownie's ticket envelope. I've never seen one of the from 1953 season, but I love all the color.

Default 1907 NYY Composite Team

It is 16 x 22 without the cardboard mount. It is a little weird that 2 photos are not identified. Webb appears to have been a known commercial photographer in NY area at turn of century. Team must have provided a bunch of photos and he did his thing. One of the 2 photos may be Neal Ball. No clue on the other. Might be Baerwald, who played as John Bell. Perhaps he could not distinguish between the two? Chase has 2 photos that both look like Chase. There is name of Al Orth on the reverse of the mount. Possibly from his estate? He played in 1907 but isn't in the composite...

2019 was slow but 2020 is starting off very strong. I've been searching for this particular woodcut for nearly 10 years! This is the one Leslie's woodcut that just should not exist. It is dated as 10/6/83 and depicts the Philadelphia BBC but all other bound and unbound publications of this date show a non-baseball print. I can only imagine that this came out at a different time or location. Super excited to cross this one off my list

If you do come across another one, please send me a message as I'd like to see some of the other pages. I'm probably one of the only people who cares about this stuff but wanted to share nonetheless. Happy collecting!

HOLY GRAIL item of sorts. First ever game ticket for the Washington Capitals back in 1974. EBay search finally pays off after 20 years. And it’s a full ticket!

Minor correction--it depicts the Athletic Base Ball Club, champions of the American Association. The Philadelphia Base Ball Club of the National League were not champions until 1915.

Default 1871 America's Cup Winner

Well here I am going off the reservation again...yes has condition issues but find another...here's the story...This is an c1871 albumen print...actually it's two joined albumens which combined as seen are 21 5/8" wide x 9 1/8" tall...that's just the photo excluding the backing and frame...

THE SCENE
The image is a panoramic of a Regatta between the NY Yacht Club and the Eastern Yacht club...more precisely ten minutes before the race started...that according to the printed information below...and speaking of the printing below...I'm very taken by the treatment...that is, how the photographer who produced it laid it all out i.e. designed the whole display...having all kinds of information what's going on in the picture...the crescendo being the legend along the bottom edge giving the names of the boats (yachts)...without that ya got nothing almost...but with it....it's a very good piece of Yachting history....and here's the hook...

THE YACHT COLUMBIA JOINT WINNER OF 1871 AMERICA'S CUP
In the photo is the Yacht Columbia identified by the legend...The Columbia went on to win the America's Cup purportedly a month after this photo was taken...I have more research to do but that's what the seller said in the listing...so to be confirmed...But I do know the Columbia was built in the same year as the photo...

So in baseball card jargon I got the Columbia's rookie card LOL...I plan a feature on it and will continue the research after I get it...should be here next week...hopeful the original wavy glass make it....

Default 1938 U.S. Ski Jump Championship Broadside

Picked up this little broadside the other day...pretty good little grab I thought seeing how it's for a national championship...then I started researching it and looking into the winner Siguard Ulland...came across a shocker in 1958 news clipping...killed his wife...said they had a $100,000.00 home (in 1958!) in Oakland Ca...that he owned a ski equipment company...

Just received this gamer of Ted Simmons back from a private signing hosted by Tom Orr. I picked the bat up a while ago hoping that Simmons might someday get in to the Hall. Really pumped to add this to the collection.

Default Ross Youngs Spalding Mini Bat / older Orioles jersey

Thrift store and antique store finds from today:

c.1920, 17.5 inch Ross Youngs autographed model SPALDING mini bat and an unknown Orioles jersey. Has some age and weight to it. Zero tagging. Baltimore wore a road grey with the black “Orioles” with orange trim from 1989-94 but this feels older than that ?

I can only imagine that this came out at a different time or location. Super excited to cross this one off my list

If you do come across another one, please send me a message as I'd like to see some of the other pages. I'm probably one of the only people who cares about this stuff but wanted to share nonetheless. Happy collecting!
That is a great piece, and you are not the only person who cares!

Congrats on the pickup.

Added a nice Chickering mailing envelope as a companion piece, to go along with my Beaneater cabinets.
