Default POST CARD BASEBALL JAPAN VS WISCONSIN

Posted By: Frank L.

Post card obtained last year. Shows Wisconsin baseball team vs Japan team KEIO. Person I received it from stated it was from 1909. Does anyone know anything about this? There is japanese lettering at bottom of postcard on front. Back of postcard states Union Postale Universelle. There is also japanese lettering in back.

I know I have seen several postcards from 1909 of the Wisconsin baseball team from their trip to Japan. I know nothing about the trip, but I have seen many other shots. I believe most of them were sold by Dan Yaw (gt.pro) a year or so back.

Default POST CARD BASEBALL JAPAN VS WISCONSIN

Found this online at Milwaukee Journal Sentinal site:

AUG. 31, 1909 -- Thirteen players on the University of Wisconsin baseball team, along with a manager, an interpreter and a press correspondent, set sail from Seattle to play a series of nine games in Japan. Forty-four days later the team leaves Japan for home.

From what I've learned they played two teams, Keio University and Wasada University. Hope this helps.

The University of Wisconsin archives has digitized Badger yearbooks.

The 1911 yearbook, starting on page 191, discusses the UW trip to Japan:

I'm a Badger, so enjoyed seeing the postcard. I also forwarded the pic to a 80-something retired Japanese speaking UW professor who will get a kick out of it.

Hello

I am willing to part with the postcard if you are interested. Possibly a trade of some sort.

I myself, am a Miami Hurricane, raised in the deep south of Miami. My only connection with the Badgers is I worked with a girl from there. I also like their football team. Like the "W".

Let me know.

Frank L.

The writing in Japanese at the bottom reads from right to left.
Wisconsin vs Keio University baseball players

Wisconsin arrived in Japan on September 16, 1909.
They played 8 games on the tour winning 4 and losing 4.
The game played on September 26 went 19 innings with Wisconsin losing to Keio 2-1.

Edited: I corrected the year
