Default What to buy?

In my senility, I want to buy a really good card to be the foundation of my collection. Price range 3-5 thousand possibly.
I was thinking a 55 Koufax or 53 Mantle Topps, or 52 Mantle Bowman.
Were it you, what's your menu ?
Thanks.

I really think it depends on the condition you're going for. In lower condition, you can easily buy two/three of those cards. You can get a Koufax in a PSA 3 for the 8-900 range, and use the remainder of those funds to Purchase either a 53 or 52 Mantle.

I suggest a 54 Topps Aaron. It’s been on the rise for a while now. Especially signed rookies.

Mantle is still the answer to almost any question about best postwar cards. If not Mantle, agree with the Aaron rookie. I wouldn't get a pitcher.

Default Best 53 Mantle

The 53 Mantle is I think a good choice. Find one that is dead-centered and the best you can afford.

I am actively buying and selling vintage sports cards graded and raw. Feedback as a buyer: https://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=297262

I am accepting select private consignments of quality vintage cards (raw or graded) and collecting "want" lists for higher end ($1K+) vintage cards.

Out of those 3 you listed, I would go with the 52 bowman Mantle, and you should be able land a 52 bowman Mays with your price range. That would be a great foundation.

Not on your list but I'd buy the best Topps Jackie Robinson I could find in your price range.

For the bedrock of your collection, you have to go with the '53 Mantle. The best of the card manufacturers and the most beloved ballplayer of the last 70 years.

I vote for the 54 Aaron as well. Seems undervalued relative to his contribution to the game.
