Default T206 Foley White - Who is it supposed to be?

Foley White never played for the Houston Buffs. He did play briefly for Galveston. I read in the Goodwin catalog that they believe Foley White could have been mistaken for Carl White, who played a handful of games for Houston in 1909.

Also, better known player, George Whiteman played for Houston in 1907 -1908 alongside Tris Speaker in 1907. Whiteman as far as I can tell played OF/2nd/3rd.

Does anyone know who the starting catcher was for the Houston Buffs circa 1908-1909?

Default White...

I always thought these 2 SLer's looked way too similar. Coloring, catcher mitts, uniforms, players look, etc. - Just a random observation.

Jeremy, that is a great observation. Thebo and Foley White are both listed on the Waco roster for 1909 by baseball reference. Does anyone have a photo of Thebo or Foley White?

According to the book "The Texas League in Baseball 1888-1958" by Marshall Wright, Foley split his 80 games as catcher in 1909 between Waco and Houston. It doesn't list the number of games played for each team though.

According to the book the league didn't keep great stats that year as far as the number of games the players played for each team. 25% of all players in the 1909 season played for more than 1 team and almost 10% played for more than 2.

The other catchers for Houston were:
1908 Henry Dawson
1908 Bill Powell
1908 D.W. Woods
1909 Bill Killifer
1909 Brooks Gordon
1910 John Burch
1910 Billy Kelsey
1910 John Wickenhoffer

Foley White started 1909 with Houston. He caught games in March and April, the last on 4/15/1909. The Texas League season started on 04/17/1909 and White didn't see any playing time before being released. He played his first game for Waco on 05/30/1909.

White never recorded a statistic with Houston, but that is the team he was playing with when the southern league players were selected to be in the set.

Default Foley White

Tim, thanks for posting that newspaper clipping. I guess it is supposed to be Foley White on the T206 card.

Well that ruins my trivia question about Lundgren being the only T206 player who didn’t play for the team he’s shown with (Kansas City).

“White never recorded a statistic with Houston.”

There is a more recent thread on here where I found an old newspaper box score with White in the Houston line-up. I'll see if I can find it.

Here's the thread. The box score was March 24, which is in line with what Tim explained above.

Paul, you know that Ellam-Nashville did not play for Nashville until 1916, five or six years after the card was printed. How did they know he would end up in Nashville. In the T206 years Ellam played for Birmingham. oh my!!!

I just looked on Newspapers.com, and found a box score from the game on Mar 23rd, 1909 between the Houston Buffaloes and the Houston Heights. The newspaper is the Houston Daily Post.

It specifically identifies Foley White in the story, saying he hit a triple and stole home. The box score lists him as the leftfielder that day for the Buffaloes.
