Default “Every collection should have at least one card from this set….”

Would love thoughts and ideas to help me complete my wish list for next week’s National - I am on a journey to complete a “playing days” card for every HOF and am about 50% of the way there.

What I would love help and ideas with us… which card sets are so iconic and beautiful that any good HOF collection should have at least one from this set (within affordability reasons)

I’m not a huge “rarity-chaser” collector, though that could be something in my future! But I have examples from nearly all Topps issues, T206, T205, T212, Goudy 33 and 34 and some less mainstream cards like Redman Tobacco and 70’s Kelloggs cards

What other sets would you all suggest to consider? Here are a few on my target list that I currently don’t have but really like:

- 1909 Ramly
- 1914 Cracker Jack
- 1888 Goodwin Champion
- 1933 Delong
- 1938 Goudey (I know many hate these but I think having one of the HOF catchers would be a great look)

What else would you suggest I add to my National Shopping list??

Thx all,

Jeff

First 2 that come to my mind are T3 and M110.

You have some great sets on your list.
I also really like 1941 Play Ball. The art, colors and player lineup are great in this set. I also like how its around the time of ww2.

It’s funny you joke about the FF card… I have actually thought of having a side display of controversial/iconic cards too

I would suggest the following ...

1887 Allen & Ginter - N28
1887 Old Judge - N172
1934 - 36 Diamond Stars - R327

Default 1906 Fan Craze

1906 Fan Craze of Jake Beckley. His t206 is terrible as he looks like Dave Hill of the 1970's band Slade.

Right, Old Judge… totally agree. Thankfully I do have both N28 and Diamond Star examples

I wasn't joking ever collection should have one. I am super excited to have what is probably the rarest of the rare versions in the mail on the way to my collection now.

If you track the history of baseball cards the prime major league card sets in order are (this was off the top of my head so please excuse me if I omitted something):

Old Judges
E107
T206
M101-4/5
E121
Goudey
Leaf/Bowman
Topps

There is a story behind the timing of the issuance of most of these sets and, if so inclined, a card from each of these sets would make a nice display and talking piece.

Agree with above. It's so crazy that e107s even exist. Just a random 1903 candy issue, and it's maybe the most beautiful set ever made.

Am not familiar with the E 107 set - would you posting an image or two?

Since I haven’t seen it mentioned yet, the 1950 Bowman set is pure art. Most of the 1951 Bowman images are just cropped versions of the 1950 issue.

I once had a project very similar to yours.

I would consider …

E93 (Waddell or Wagner)
E95 (Crawford)
E96 (Baker or Mack)
E120 (Traynor)
E121 (Covaleski, Heilmann, Sisler or Youngs)

Not including w600 type 1s, the E107 set, which uses many of the classic t206 Horner images (6 years before t206) has rookies of Wagner, Mathewson, Bender, Chance, Plank, Joss, Waddell, among others. Plus it’s got a ton of other HOFers, including the e90-1 Young image, Ed Delahanty’s last card, Lajoie, Keeler, Ned Hanlon (who is tough to find), etc.

Here are some HOFers

E107s are awesome, Belfast, but be prepared to spend a whole lot of money for one.

I would include E90, as the most significant set and representative of the 1909-1911 lithographic caramel card explosion.

An Old Judge for sure. Took me years to find one that struck the right balance of pose, condition, and cost for me. So pleased to have finally added one to my collection
