Default Graded Cards and You - Perfect Together

Posted By: KJ

In a set like t206 - Is it worth it to go after common players with a low grade? For example I keep to the practice of not bidding on any non-HOFers with a PSA grade of 2 or lower. Should I raise my standards and make my min. grade a 4? Should I lower my standards and go after any card as long as its a good deal?

I am just curious what other board members practice when bidding for common players.

It's your set, so you have to be the final judge. But a good rule of thumb in building a set is to try to keep the grades of all the cards as consistent as possible.

Some think that purchasing the higher priced cards in a high a grade as you can afford makes sense; and not wasting a dime on a common - buy them as fillers - because that is what they are (grade G or less).

I’m with Barry uniformity is the key. The set should have a strong visual appeal across the board not a bunch of 1’s with a handful of 7’s and 8’s.

I am collecting the 1933 and 34 Goudey set. In the 34s, there are fewer cards, so I don't mind going after 8s in the big cards (like the two Gehrigs). But I don't want to do the same with the 33 set, so instead, I like getting 7s and 6s in the common and low end HOFers, but I'm plenty happy with 6s or 8oc in the Ruths or Gehrigs.
