Default Slightly disappointed.

I spent the whole day at the National today and just got back to the hotel empty handed. T206s had been apparently picked over already according to the dealers. I was looking for a nice Cobby portrait (Sweet Cap, of course) but there wasn't much of a selection for me. Not many deals either.
--Christopher.
P.S.: Couldn't find any strip cards I needed either. Back to the B/S/T forum for me.

Admittedly, light on the acquisitions, but Thank You to Kevin and Thank You to William. Also, I thought Jerry Colonna's picture summed up the reactions to the Black Swamp find. If anyone can identify the players from the Japanese cards, let me know. The dealer and I both thought the American was Tom Tresh, but he did not play in Japan.

I didn't make it this year... Personally I have always found it to be a great show to pick up my odd Marshall University guys, and can usually find a bulk lot.

That is definitely Korean born Harimoto! That wasn't his birth name, he changed it when he moved to Japan and played for the Toei Flyers. That is all I know . Nice card!

Default First National in 9 years

I finally made it back to the National after a 9 year absence. I went with the attitude that it was going to be a social event, and if I found anything for my collection than even better.

I was not dissapointed!

I went on Thursday and Friday. I picked up my first purchase from Richard M. at Leon & Scott's booth...a pristine Claude Berry HRK. It will make a nice companion piece to my redeemed example.

I closed the 1st day by picking a nice Reach children catcher's mitt. Besides these pickups, the highlight of the first day was finally getting to meet and talk with Mark Macrae and Ted Z at their booth. I talked both their ears off, and could not have enjoyed the conversations any more.

With the pressure off on Friday, I picked up four Menko catchers on a whim. You can't beat $5.00 a card. I also was thrilled to have picked up my 2nd Pacific Coast Biscuit, Carl Mitze. I traded some B18 duplicates, and some cash on a nice deal with All Marty's Stuff. As an added bonus, it has a Aldon Candy Co. stamp on the back.

My only regret of the show was that I had to leave the dinner early at 8:00 p.m. to catch the Amtrak train back to Maine. It was great re-connect with old friends and to finally meet others that I have never met face to face with before. I finally met Andy Baran, who I had chatted with going back to the old Full Count Board. Simply an awesome trip!

I am more of a hockey guy, I picked up 3 51 Parkhurst for my set and they are all at SGC for grading.

The only baseball that I picked up was a fluke T3 setting on the side of a display cabinet that contained all memorabilia. I picked this up for $40. I have always wanted a T3 and am glad to get it at a good price.

Default Gaijin

Brian, what you have are two "Gaijin" cards. Gaijin is a term used for non-Japanese players in the Japanese League. It literally means "foreigner". Since the first guy is American and the second guy has been identified as Korean they would both fall under this category.

As far as identifying the American, I can't help you. But I know a guy who can. His name is Rob. You'll find his contact info on his website: http://www.robsjapanesecards.com/

Congrats on your additions, perhaps you're unintentionally (or intentionally) becoming the next big collector of Japanese menko cards! There's not too many out there!

I picked up a 1933 Rittenhouse Candy card of Lefty Grove with a "Y" on the back for my "back" collection. I also picked up a very nice autographed photo of Grove drinking milk.

Didn't find anything on my main my "want list" (M101-2 Cobb or M101-2 ad backs, Gertenrich backs, or Old Judge O'Days), so that got me looking at tickets and I picked up a couple from Shibe Park ... (image below)

And I did meet fellow Net54er Jay Miller and picked up some E135 Collins-McCarthy's from him ... (image below)

I also met Leon, Scott Brockelman, Robert Silverman, Jantz, Bruce Babcock, Ted Z., and Ryan Christoff. I thought Ken was setting up at the show, but unfortunately I didn't see him

Funny part was when I was standing at the Lucky & Brockelman booth and someone came up asking for Leon. Scott said Leon was away, but to look in a certain direction for a short, bald, fat man similar to George Castanza. hee hee.

The Cobb was just reholdered as it had something inside the holder. The rest were bought at the National (raw) and holdered on site.

No scans right now but I was able to pick up a beauty of a t206 freak. A Bresnahan batting in vg+ with his image and name on the back, plus it has a full crop mark in the bottom right corner! $100

Got a rare OJ card too thanks to Dan McKee loaning me $20 because I decided to come down here poor. Sterling $100

Buy cards from Dan! Great guy!

Saw Leon, he didn't want to talk to me, that was awkward, wish I knew what he was driving, I would've flattened a tire then stood there and not talked to him while he waited to get it fixed

Here is a bad camera phone pic of it

Hi-
This was my first time at the national and I thought it was an excellent show. I am sorry I could not meet more board members, but those I did, (like Ted Z, Brett, Kjavic, Marty K, BigFish, Mghpro and others) I very much enjoyed seeing.
Coming from MA, I drove down with the purpose of selling some cards, and a large group of memorabilia. I sold almost everything I had, which usually does not happen for me even at large regional shows. The kicker was that my largest sale was to a dealer from Massachusetts! The items I sold I consider my excess from the last 6 months of agressive flea market and antique shopping (including a very successful Brimfield last month). My biggest problem was that I had very little time to go shopping! Thus, my only pickups were a M101-2 Jake Stahl early Thursday morning (in rough shape but really cheap) and the German stamps below. I like that the Lajoie is on an intact strip and I really like the two different Leach stamps. The original price tag was way too high but the dealer came down 45.00 when he accepted my offer Friday afternoon as I was leaving.
I am already looking forward to Chicago (but I doubt I will drive). Amazing pickups from everyone so far. Gary, the photos are incredible!
Alan

Got a rare OJ card too thanks to Dan McKee loaning me $20 because I decided to come down here poor. Sterling $100

Buy cards from Dan! Great guy!

Saw Leon, he didn't want to talk to me, that was awkward, wish I knew what he was driving, I would've flattened a tire then stood there and not talked to him while he waited to get it fixed

Here is a bad camera phone pic of it
Dang - I looked at that Sterling OJ and thought he was a tougher player but I didn't trust myself enough to pull the trigger! Nice pickup John!

Thanks, Brian T., for parting with this. I know it wasn't easy.

Sorry Chris, yes it is a very tough OJ to find. I think off-hand only one has been graded and I used to own it but I sold it to a friend. Wanted another since I got rid of it and paid a very small fraction of the price
