Anthony- I appreciate the Duke, he's a cult figure. Have you ever eaten at Duke's in Santa Monica? Good food, terrific view.

My only "pre-war" Sportkings. I have a bunch of post-war starting with Truman, but these are the only two that I can justify posting here.

OK, fine... They were at least signed pre-war.

Alan U. - What a great looking Bobby Jones you have.

ps - Duke's is in Malibu, with a great view, but if you want much better food go Guido's for Italian in Malibu, overlooking Cross Creek, or Taverna Tony's right nearby for Greek food. Lotsa celebs frequent both.

It is interesting to me that Duke is listed as a swimmer. Though, he was quite the accomplished swimmer and is in the swimming HOF, I think he is far better known for his surfing.

Except that back then surfing was pretty unknown (Duke brought it to the mainland and to Australia around this time) so had he been just a surfer he never would've been known outside Castles.

I suspect all those Olympic medals are what got him the title of Sport King.

As long as this worthwhile thread has already come a bit off the rails I invite you to look at a few of my items that pertain to Hawaii's beloved hero, Duke Kahanamoku. http://tinyurl.com/9j87cy

Always been fascinated by this set and some of the athletes depicted. It would be cool to hear a little more of the background of some of the non-baseball players. What elevated them to the status of sport kings.

Any why weren't there a few more ball players. Surely that would have made the set more marketable.

Jim, The NHL HoF produced a video bio on Shore. (There are similar vids for all the hof's)

N54 doesn't allow embedded's any longer, apparently.

I love this set - I may get around to collecting it one day.

Off the top of my head...

4. (5 points) This Sport King was known as the Ambling Alp.

Primo Carnera

5. (5 points) This Sport King is a member of 4 National Hall of Fames.

Jim Thorpe

10 (2 points each) These Sport Kings acted in movies other then cameos as themselves ( at least 9)

Weismuller, Dempsey, Carnera, Baer, Tunney ??

12 (5 points) This Sport King has a card in the 1911 T218 champions set

Willie Hoppe - I had to look the name up, but I knew it would be a billiard player as all other sports involve physical fitness - something you couldn't sustain over 20+ years.

13. (5 points) This Sport King was a member of an Olympic water polo team. (did not win medal)

Duke Kahanamoku - Weismuller also was but won a medal.

16 (5 points) This wealthy Sport King checked into a hospital for the last time with a paper bag with over $1,000,000 worth of negotiable bonds and a lugar pistol.

Ty Cobb

17 (1 point each) These four Sport Kings played Major League baseball.

Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Carl Hubbell, Jim Thorpe

Duke Kahanamoku was Sheriff of Honolulu from 1932 to 1961. It is said that he never made a single arrest. Also acted in numerous movies. Competed against his brother Sam in '24 Olympics (100 meter freestyle, Weismuller gold, Duke silver, Sam bronze).

Eddie Shore did a McSorley on Ace Bailey causing him to fracture his skull and ending his career.

Gene Tunney's son John served one term as a US Senator from California.

First SK to die? Probably Rockne in 1931 (before set was issued). Last to die? Probably Doolittle in 1993.

Board's kinda quiet. Is there a game on TV or something?
