Default Need a reality check

Lost an eBay item today and 10 min later got a Second Chance Offer to buy it. My highest was not a crazy high bid for the card but was not insignificant ($900). Seller has very light feedback but nothing negative. But somehow seems sketchy. Honestly I was considering retracting my bid because the feedback was light and the story posted about how we acquired card from his dead grandfather seemed dubious.
On the other hand, if he flat out rips me off I assume I am covered by pay pal.

My instincts tell me to let it go. I was played. But it’s a cool card you don’t see very often.

Weighing my options. Any thoughts?

a second chance offer coming in that quickly is a red flag... not worth the hassle in my opinion. Ignore the second chance...

Yeah, I guess that probably means my buddy was shilling it for me and ooops we accidentally won.

But I’d buy the card for that price tonight if it was at Heritage. My only hesitation.

If I wanted the card bad enough and it was hard to find I might still go for it. Or counter the second chance offer. But yea the timing looks pretty shady. You are covered by the eBay and PayPal guarantees, plus your credit card.

Oh the things we do for cardboard.

I've been in your position many times and have both passed and accepted.

It's never an easy call though either way.

I just messaged him and said what was up with the quick second offer. Told me that the winner had a problem with his PayPal account and PayPal suspended it. “His loss.” Sounds like utter bs.
BUT he sent me a new picture of him supposedly holding the card.
I’m about 70% percent let it go, 30% go for it.

Here’s the card. He’s even sweetened the offer with a Maris card.

Not a big fan of desperation (meaning on the part of the seller, now throwing extra things in). Look at the bidding history. If the shill hadn't shilled what would the card have gone for. Offer him that.

Passing.
Same dude sold a similar card in November. Runner up there was same guy who “won” this and had supposedly some problem.
Sounds to me like 100% unadultated prime BS.

And I just went back to his November auction and that was “his final relist”of that item.

Had that happen to me once. When I looked at the bid history, the shilling was easy to spot. I offered the guy one increment over the last legitimate bid. He declined, saying that his ebay isn't a flea market. I would almost never accept a second chance offer that soon after the auction.

That card sold twice in a short period of time by the same seller.

First auction ended 28JAN18 ($750 was winning bid).

https://www.ebay.com/itm/26345159840...p2471758.m4704

Same guy won it the second time around for $910. The guy is obviously full of shit. Why would he allow the same a-hole to bid on it if he couldn't pay for it the first time. Looks like you didn't bid on it the first time. Too bad, you probably could have won it for < $900 or at least drove his shill bidder up.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/1887-N172-O...AAAOSwlpZaZNm~

He's got it up for $1K (or best offer).

UGH, Leon is this the kind of thing you can bring to ebay's attention? Obvious shilling etc...

He's only sold one thing in the past 6 months. Guess who was under bidder on that auction? Same butt head who was the high bidder on the Whitney with dog OJ. That bidder has only bid on that seller's auctions.

Sounds like a real winner....

The problem with eBay is they won't do anything about this. They're looking at the bottom line, and this is bring them in more money in fees collected. So why oust shillers. It really sucks as buyers/sellers.

It's though when you list a card over and over on BIN, and it doesn't sell then you list it in action and it sells for very little. People are afraid auctions are going to be shilled, so they're reluctant to bid on them.

even sadder yet...in addition to all the icky stuff that this guy has tried to pull off, these two transactions will show up on VCP and will artificially inflate the "market price" of this card to the next unsuspecting buyer.

As a policy, I reject all second chance offers. 99% are a result of shilling gone wrong. SCOs are eBay's clever way to allow shillers to try to get away with one, then have an out if it goes south.

Just pass on this guy.

Like i have said many times it doesnt matter why they are selling the card...if needed money so bad he woud of just sold it for 700 and be done with it instead of taking all this time back and forth while his father is lacking his medication...
