Default 1952 TOPPS Mantles....Type 1 & Type 2

For those unfamiliar with the subtle differences in the Mickey Mantle card (since it was Double-Printed on the sheet containing the 97 cards in the Hi # series).

.. Type 2 .................................................. .................................................. Type 1

......... /\.........glossy arm........../\ ........../\-------/\..ragged top braid name box

Thanks for posting. I wasn't aware of the difference regarding the arm and the braid. I guess I've never studied them closely. I've always just analyzed the box.

Please correct me if I am wrong. Type one (or A) 52T Mantle has the full black box around the Yankee logo?

Type two (or B) has the incomplete black box around the Yankee Logo?

I have owned several dozen of 311 over the years and I think that type 1 or A always has brighter colors and doesn't appear dingy like type two or B.

Or do I have it backwards? Dave

............ HAPPY BIRTHDAY ............

You are very perceptive.

I missed that flaw on the Type 2 version.

Default Mantle Variation

The last edition of SCD lists variations for all 3 of the 52 double prints. In each case the stitches on the back baseball always run right or left on the Mantle, Robinson and Thompson. But as Ted points out, the Mantle, and the Robinson and Thompson also have front differences. On the Mantle, for me, the easiest ones to spot are the top of the box star line is wavy or straight, the e in the auto is truncated or not, the black border at the top has tails, or not, and the pixel shows on the left or not

I'd also add, note the position of the Y in Mickey, in relation to the inner border of the box. It practically touches.

On EVERY bogus Mantle card I see in a cracked holder on ebay, the one thing they all have in common is the Y is too high, with a several mm wide gap between the base of the loop and the box.

Default Mantle

I had the impression Ted was focused on the differences between the two different real Mantles rather than how to distinguish real from fakes

So? I figured while we're discussing the distinguishing characteristics between type As and Bs, it might be worth mentioning some diagnostics for authenticity, if it saves some poor sucker from buying a fake in a cracked holder on ebay...

I was thinking the same thing. I knew one variation had brighter colors than the other, but I couldn't remember which one it was for sure.
