Default T206 Johnson Port PSA 9 to be in Dec. Mastro's

Posted By: MVSNYC

The pop is surprisingly high: 1/6...

It origianlly sold for $38,358 from the SCP Harris Sale, 6 years ago...

What will this card sell for now? Any guesses?

My guess is $60-70K

Doubt it with that pop. Assuming the other 5 are held by the top 5 Registry people, will number 6 really pay that much with little or no chance of moving up? Its the Registry that moves these outrageous prices.

in theory what you are saying has merit, BUT if you take a look at the top 5 T206 sets (i know & deal with 3 out of the 5 regularly), only ONE person collects 9's (# 1 Don L.), the other collect 6's, 7's & 8's...there are only a few of us (not in the top 5), who collect 9's, and our purpose is not to be ranked or move up in the standings, it's to have a few super-high quality cards to appreciate and cherish, not for set registry purposes...

Because it is a card as desirable as the Johnson portrait and because of its pristine condition, it will also get bids from collectors who like high end classic cards, as well as from those dreaded investors. It doesn't necessarily have to end up with someone trying to complete a registry set.

Well, one sold last year for $37,700 in the same grade. Although prices fluctuate, especially with the high-end material, I can't imagine it having doubled in a year.

Actually, prices have come down a little on some of the high-end T206's in the last few months. I don't know if this is a newly forming pattern or just an abberation in the data...time will tell.

The PSA 8-9 registry market is a volatile one, so you should expect short term fluctuations.

i did not know that another 9 sold last year for only $37,000, if i would have known that, i would have refinanced to get it...that is such a good price for a card of that caliber. 8's of that card have sold in the mid 20's over the last year or two...

The Mathewson that sold a few years ago in REA was the Harris specimen. Surprisingly it really didn't go up in value between both auctions. Maybe it will do better this time. Rare Cards has a PSA 9 Nap Lajoie throwing T206 with Sover... back. He wants more than triple SMR value. Seems like a lot of money but how much does the Sover... back come into play on price. Are there other PSA 9 T206's for sale out there?

i just sold two 9's (both 1/1)...Donovan-throwing & Egan (Harris)...

and i just purchased three 9's in the Heritage Auction: Mullin-horiz, Chapelle, Donohue...

my best friend (who i share a set registry position with), has the Griffith-portrait (Harris) 9 (1/1), it is a stunner...

as far as 9's, every now & then you'll see some pop up, but not that often.

These non HOF'er T206 9 are admittedly great cards but I think I'll stick to a couple of HOF'ers in 9 or SCG 8.5. By the way what do you think an 8.5 goes for compared to a 8 or 9 price in T206.

I can't say as I've ever seen a straight auction for an 8.5 in T-206. A Hunt auction from a year or so ago had a lot of T-206 cards that included a Dooin SGC 92, but I haven't see too many others.

So much of the prices of the 8s [and, to a lesser extent, 9s] is driven by Registry considerations on PSA (which I'm not endorsing, by the way), I see relatively few T-206s in very high grade in SGC holders for the purposes of sale/auction. It seems like those that exist are graded by collectors and stay with those collectors.

I guess I'm like everyone else I like t206's for there color and poses. I have an SGC 96 Frank Chance batting and a SGC 92 Johnny Evers with Chicago Shirt. The evers I may have paid to much for (10k) but it is the finest known(there are no 9's only a bunch of 8's). I'd like to get a tinker someday in 9(there is only one) to complete a tinkers to evers to chance high end set. Getting the tinker I know will be hard. What do you people have in T206's 8's and 9's?

MVSNYC you have a nice set of T206's. Since you know more about them then I do do you think I paid to much for my evers(10k) T206 chicago shirt common back in SGC 92. It is finest known(there are no 9's just a bunch of 8's). I see Heritage auctioned an 8 recently for 4500 with commission.

thank you, that's kind...it took me many years to build-up or "parlay" my collection to what it is now...a lot of smart buys & trades...

my first knee-jerk reaction was "Wow, he overpaid for the Evers"...BUT, upon closer analysis, there are obviously no cards as high as it, or higher (1/1)...so in that respect you are good to go.

IF there was an Evers 9 out there, my guess is it would be worth $13-17K (remember this pose is his least popular), and an 8 is worth probably $5-7K.

So, with all of that said the current value for your SGC 8.5 SHOULD be around $10K, congratulations...

Thanks again. If you guys are really into T206's SCP will have a hoard of them for sale at the end of the month. Mostly 7,8 some HOF'ers with a couple of 9's. They have a PSA 9 Willie Keeler HOF not part of the hoard. There are 5/6 9's out there with at least one 8.5(it was offered to me for 10k,I turned it down). REA in 2004 had a SGC 96 Willie Keeler that went for 5500(what do you think that was about) and a PSA 9 went a couple of years ago for 15/16k. Don't know what to make of the prices for this card. What do you guys think it will go for.

Keeler PSA 9? probably close to $20K...i think what i am about to say will raise a ruckus (Barry-spelling?)...BUT, the prices that SGC realizes at auction cannot hold a candle of those from PSA sales, i think overall, collectors just like the PSA product better...let the stone throwing begin.

Agree with you MVSNYC that PSA still has it over SGC in price but I think its slowly changing were in 5/10 years when I sell my SGC cards it will be even. You will be buying the card not the holder.

Like it that Barry Sloate is on the forum. For a card dealer to monitor this must mean he must really like his work. Hello Barry. As far as New York Manhattan in December its a mad house any place you go. I'v done it before for coin shows and antiquity exhibitions at Sothebys. Like to come out with you guys(its a 2 1/2 hour bus ride) but not with all these people and you won't be able to talk in a crowded resturant. Weekends are good for me but not weekdays cause of work. But I'll pass this time. What do you think of my chances of getting the PSA 9 Joe Tinker that's out there(maybe in the next 5 to 7 years)? PS Mid January is slow in Manhattan maybe you should do the dinner then. MVSNYC are any of your T206's finest known or tied for it?

MVSNYC you have a lot of finest known commons. From what I understand your in a good position. Finest known commons in key sets are doing well now. We'll have to look at the T206's in SCP. The catalog is suppose to go online 11/10/06 this Friday. The PSA 9 Willie Keeler I thought would go for about 15k vs.with all the 9's out there but we'll see. Is 10k for a Willie Keeler SGC 92 worth it if the PSA 9 goes for 20k?

MVSNYC how much do you think my t206 sgc 96 Frank Chance batting is worth? There are about 4 or 5 Frank Chance 9's out there in all poses and a lot of 8's. Are you going to bid on anything in the upcoming auctions?

Chance, batting (not his best card)...maybe 9-12K?

i just won three 9's in heritage, so probably will chill for awhile (i might actually sell one or two of them, not sure yet)...i am starting to focus on WS Tix...
