Default OT: Hit a collecting wall, advice?

So, I have hit a collecting wall and haven't really gotten any cards for my collecting focus (HOF signed rookies or close to it). What do you all recommend to do to keep me interested so I don't lose focus?

I haven't really picked up anything in over 6 months (since I got my Ruth), and I feel like I'm drifting away which I don't want to happen.

What do you do when this happens to help keep you in the game?

I broaden my collecting horizons when that happens.

Start a couple new projects like 35 goudey, 49 Bowman, e95, or a Topps set. It will keep you involved and checking ebay and the b/s/t.

Brent - I, too, appear to have hit that wall. I just got rebuffed on a very generous offer for a very overpriced Schalk card and only have one other card on my shopping list.

On the positive side, I have spent a lot in the last two months and still have a Delong Foxx on the way...so, I guess I would suggest that you take a good long look at what you're acquired and enjoy it.

Those are really good words. I know I often focus too much on "whats next" and don't take enough time to look back at what I have. Its absolutely FREE to enjoy what you already have.

I couldn't agree more. I find myself going to my little collection on my website and just browsing, if I need a fix....

Thank you everyone for the advice, Leon, I do tend to go to my site often because I still cannot believe what I have accumulated for my collection at such a young age.

I know this game isn't a "race", but it has felt like a hell of a marathon. I don't really want to venture into other areas and spend some extra money I have into areas I do not need. I am filling up my Mauer collection nicely now, and have ventured into pre-war signed HOF or anything, which I feel is a good branch of what I am collecting and still holds some good focus.

When signed T206s dried up, I got bored of the unsigned ones and started building a mid-grade 33 goudey set. Just keeping the collecting ball rolling, even if it isn't my one true calling.

As others have said...I also have a baseball collection rotation.

Baseball HOF snapshot photos
Baseball HOF signed RCs
Baseball HOF signed OMLB

When I hit the wall with one...I switch to the other..and so on. I have to say...the one things that is great about my baseball HOF snapshot photo collection is EVERY photo is different. ALWAYS something new and different.Where as HOF RC you are seeing the same cards signed over, over, and over again. This goes with baseballs as well to some degree.

Try collecting money so that when something you need pops up you'll have plenty of trade bait.

I usually find a project of opportunity...I got a buy on a lot of Delongs and picked off that set (low grade). I always collect cards of players from my alma mater (Marshall University) and they put enough guys in the pros to keep me busy, especially with the Canadian football league. I am also picking off a 1961 set now, my birth year. I have to admit that one has yet to take hold on me. The cards as a whole in high grade a pretty expensive, but the fact remains I could complete it in a day if I didn't mind to overpay on a few. I constantly upgrade my t206 set.

For me, a few hours spent alone with some very fine distilled spirits and some of my finest cards.

Find a set to build, one you enjoy the colors, size, player pics whatever you fancy. This is usually fun and a challenge.

Honest mistake!

As Lost sinks deeper and deeper into the depths of the sea of forgetfulness, I sometimes think about changing to my Net54 member name to something else, but then a post like yours appears and makes it all worthwhile.

Brent,
What really keeps me going is the hunt. Not necessarily for my collection, but uncovering something and flipping it to the right owner. I can honestly say that I don't do it for the size of the profit (and to date I've never had a loss), but rather the thrill of the find. I have made as little as a few dollars, up to hundreds, but a lot of things I sell are at a price where the buyer either gets a good deal for their collection or can flip themselves.

I try not to limit myself to sports. I try to have a broad knowledge of value, desirability, and my ability to find a buyer. Every day I comb the online listings for local auctions for some reason to go. A lot of times it is a strikeout. But sometimes it's a grand slam! (Today there is a possible type I of a 30's minor league team)

I don't really know your situation or general interests. I am a junkie of all of that Antiques Roadshow/Pawn Stars/American Pickers type of shows. I love going to the fleas/auctions/antique malls. At this point when I pick up something for myself, it is a bonus. I realize this may not happen if you are a very specialized collector.

Now I am pumped! I have two previews to get to today!

Hopefully some of this made sense. Either way, that's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

My wife and I love the tv show Continuum. Rittenhouse released a trading card set and we decided to try to complete it together. It's been a lot of fun.

I also advise that you broaden your horizons. I used to specifically collect post war cards. Then I got bored and started collecting autographs, exhibit cards, and pre war cards. Now I don't even touch the post war stuff.
