Default Walter Johnson 301st win ticket stub- May 29, 1920

I recently picked up this vintage Walter Johnson win ticket at Philly A's.
This was Walter's 301st career win and a nifty shutout to boot (#88/110 career shutouts- a ML record). WaJo shut out the A's 5-0 with 7 K's and 0 BB in the 2nd game of a double header.

This ticket originated from a large collection of vintage Philadelphia A's and Phillies ticket stubs that first surfaced in the hobby in the mid 1990's. All games were most likely attended by one patron or family as all the notations were written in the same hand.

Hey Scott, I actually had a shot at that ticket the day before you picked it up but I passed as I did not have enough info to place it on that exact date. As you know, I have been piecing together undated Yankees stubs for a while now and am at the point where I have 1923-1973 pinned. I also have decoded NY Giants stubs 1948-1957.

Not that I need a new project, but does the "C" refer to 1920 as I suspect?

Pat,
Sorry, I don't have an answer to that question about the "C" reference. I'm not sure what its significance is.
I do know a fair amount about the collection that it came from and am very comfortable with the source, FWIW.
I have bought several tickets from this collection since they first surfaced in 1994.

Default A's ticket

It would be great if someone could puzzle out Philadelphia Athletics (and Phillies) tickets. This isn't mine and I can't remember where I got the scan but here's a ticket presumably from that same Philadelphia fan. It's dated 1921 but has an "A" so it doesn't seem to suggest the Athletics used a letter to designate the year.

I don't have any Athletics tickets from the 1920's. The particular examples I have from the 1930's lack any letter prefixes but letters do return in the 1940's.

Also, you can look at the small window when Connie Mack was the manager and narrow the years down that way too....

I picked up an orange Memorial Stadium 1971 World Series press pass the other day on EBay. Included with the pass were quite a few ticket stubs and four complete tickets to mid 1960s Giants games. The most interesting of the stubs can be seen below. I don’t know if they have any value but they sure were fun to research. The entire lot only cost me $50 I got at least that much fun out of them.

May 8, 1927 at Comiskey Park: The game featured four Yankee hall of Famers who contributed to the win; Ruth Gehrig and Lazzeri went 6 for 13 and scored seven runs between them while Waite Hoyt collect his fourth win of the season.

September 4, 1927 at Wrigley Field: The Cardinals turned a triple play that went Frisch-Bottomley-Maranville-O'Farrell-Frisch-Bottomley- Bell. Charlie Root earned his 24th win of the season. This game also featured seven future Hall of Famers in Frisch, Bottomely, Haffey, Maranville, Hartnett, Wilson, and umpire Klem.

September 25, 1927 at Wrigley Field: Charlie Root took the loss. The Waner brothers and Pie Traynor went a combined 7 for 12. When you add umpire Bill Klem, Hack Wilson and Gabby Hartnett this game featured six members of the Hall of Fame. The other umpire that day was Beans Reardon who despised Klem. Although he failed to earn induction into the Hall of Fame Reardon was a close friend of Mae West and she is said to have sent him a copy of a nude photograph every Christmas.

June 20, 1928 at Wrigley Field: Hall of Famer Jesse Haines earned the victory. This game featured eight future members of the Hall of Fame in Haines, Marranville, Bottomley, Frisch, Cuyler, Wilson, and Hartnett. The game also featured Umpire Cy Rigler. Rigler is probably best remembered for calling the famous "phantom catch" in the 1925 World Series. Earl Smith hit a pop fly into the right field corner; Sam Rice fell into the bleachers and came up with the ball in his glove. Rigler called Smith out and controversy ensued for the next 50 years. Upon Rice's death, a letter was opened and Rice affirmed he did catch the ball.

I don't think it is unfathomable to think the A's undated ticket code could be cracked for the simple reason that now that I have seen enough samples, they seem to have used a lettering system like the Yankees and Giants did for the majority of their history. Scott......

Are all the tickets from that 1994 collection you obtained have letter "C" on them?

If the answer is yes, than I would say its worth attempting to piece together. If no, then I am not sure where to even begin.

Actually only one of my tickets from this collection has a "C" on it Pat.
Without the patron adding notes to the tickets, it would be a real challenge to nail down exact dates...
