Default Important New Find - I think

One of the rarest 1930's sets is the Tarzan Thoro Bread set (D382). Well, this sucker just popped up on ebay. I lost, probably to Leon. The front is identical to a Tarzan card. But the back advertises Trophy Thoro Bread. The style of the back is otherwise identical to the Tarzan cards. Anyone ever see another one of these?

Paul,

This is clearly in the wrong thread. All Leon bashing belongs in the "One That Got Away" thread.

You know how messy it gets when we have two threads going on the same subject!

It looks like the red "TROPHY" part of the back is a label that has been attached to cover the "Tarzan" advertisement. I can't say I have ever seen that before, interesting card.

Well I just held my little black light up to the image of the card's back, and it fluoresced big time!!! So I'm glad Leon won it. I look forward to seeing him post a scan of the front with a Texas quarter aside.

Seriously, nice find.

I tell ya' it's a conspiracy out here. I get no respect. That is most likely a store advertisement sticker over the Tarzan wording. That is what another board member and I talked about earlier this evening...and that was my thought. I will let ya'll know when it comes in happy.gif....

Wow. I'm glad I lost. I'd like a Tarzan card, but I'd rather have one without the sticker.

Leon, I'm with you, I like it with the label on back-something I have never seen before.

It is much more interesting than those dime-a-dozen Tarzan Bread cards.

Second place is no fun on this one. At least I can smile knowing Leon had to pay to push us little guys around.

I was asked about this card within two days of it hitting ebay and had my snipe set knowing it was a Tarzan with some kind of alternate advertising. I am glad Leon won since I would probably have just turned and sold it again. My snipe though was nearly $150 too low! Congrats Leon.

My snipe was $300.00 too low. I was worried about it being some sort of reprint. However, it was pretty clear from the description that the seller didn't know what he had. The description was pretty accurate too, right down to the trimming on the bottom.

Any guesses on what the lot of 10 Tarzans will go for in the next Mastro sale?

Wish I had seen it although I probably wouldn't have gone that high for it. Bridges was born and raised in my hometown and coached my grandfather's youth team once.

Leon, has your Tarzan/Trophy card arrived? Can you tell us anything more about it?

Hey Paul et al (whoever "et al" is?),
The card came in and it is exactly what was thought. It is indeed a Trophy sticker on the back of the card, over the Tarzan ad. I believe there were different kinds of "thoro bread" in the day and "Trophy" might have been a brand....or this could just be a sticker a kid put on this card to signify it as a "Trophy" for something. Who knows?. It's quite interesting to me .....take care

Possibly a copyright infringement during production, and Tarzan was forced to switch names to Trophy? Cards were already printed and they didn't want to waste them, hence the sticker? Just a guess, cool card...

Somewhat off topic, but has a Tarzan "with tab" ever been found? And does anyone have an educated guess as to why the player selection is so poor? Bridges seems to be about the best player in the set.

I would bet that Trophy was just another name that Thoro used for their bread...it could be because they got a "Cease and desist" letter for using Tarzan or just a different name for a different store brand? Who knows? It's a great card either way.
