Default Is '49 Leaf Robinson Undervalued?

Posted By: peter chao

I know this is a $2,000 card in near-mint, but I keep thinking it should be worth more. After all the Satchel Paige in this set is worth about 8 times as much and the '54 Topps Hank Aaron is worth more. Without Jackie, who knows when the color line would have been broken? Is there any reason why this card shouldn't be worth $3,000-$4,000?

You cannot make the comparison you are making to arrive at a higher value for the Jackie Robinson card. This card was issued in
the 1st series of Leaf's and was probably printed in the millions.

The Paige card is in the 2nd (or scarce) series and was printed in significantly lesser amounts. Compound that with Leaf having
to withdraw their Paige card....there are very few available.

Therefore, the old axiom....the law of supply vs demand....dictates the very high value on the Paige card.

Edited to add....Incidently, the 1949 Leaf JRobby is not his 1st (or Rookie) card.

Per Psa's population report, for whatever it's worth:
To date, (530) Jackie Robinson cards have been graded from the 48-49 Leaf set
compared to only (101) of Satchell Paige.
The Paige card is also very tough to find in high grade in comparison
to Robinson's Rc.
Psa shows (52) Robinson Rc's graded higher than a Psa-7, while only (7)
of Paiges are on record grading higher than a Psa-7.

I think this is a perfect sort of post for the new Postwar Sportscards Forum.

[Edited to say] That was a nice way of saying that this is OT on this forum.

Next time I'll do that, having a little overlap won't hurt.
