Default Fake Cobb?

Hi All:

Advice would be greatly appreciated. I have a second change offer to buy this Cobb. The previous buyer flaked because he was concerned that the card is not graded and might be a fake.

It doesn't look fake to me; but I'm no expert.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

There was a discussion about this card last week. Personally, I just can't be sure. If real, it is definitely a good deal.

It looks okay to me. If it's fake, it's a "good" one.

I laughed at the "coffin nails" comment by the seller, and the fact that he said he thought it would grade a 7 or 8, lol. It's peculiar that he doesn't just get it graded himself in that case.

Go with your gut.

You can always try to get the seller to agree to make the deal contingent on the card grading as authentic.

Agree completely with this. If it is real, it seems he would no doubt benefit greatly by having it graded thus taking out any speculation as to its authenticity.

Thanks, guys! Yeah, the thought that it's a PSA 7 or 8 remark was insane. He and I have exchanged a several messages. He says he's a builder and I think doesn't want to bother with getting it graded. My impression is that he's rather unsophisticated re cards and wants the cash. I think I'll pull the trigger and get it graded.

I'm honestly more wary about his 0 seller rating than anything else. But looking at the card, everything appears right to me. The type at the bottom of the card, the registration being slightly off, etc. If anything, it might come back auth. You've got that upper right corner which doesn't match the wear pattern of the other three.

Good luck, and please let us know how this turns out.

Son of a %^&#!!! The seller's latest response:

"I'm sorry, Chris, but I changed my mind. What gave me pause was, subsequent to my last email, I noticed that after the eBay selling fee, I would net only $470. Then, at the same time, I got a response from Earl at Sportscard Guaranty in reply to the pictures I sent him, and he said that from what he can see, it may very well be authentic, and since the Old Mill back is rare, if the card is real and it grades numerically, it could sell for $2,000. I'm going to send it to him. The winning bidder blew it. He could have had the card in hand by now."

...what's especially annoying is that I told him the same damn thing two weeks ago. And, I'm not the type that will never justify spending that much on a piece of cardboard. Dammit...

That back is rare? Maybe it's rare with the Cobb red bg, but it's not a rare back. I have it as 29th out of 39 backs, with Ty Cobb being #1 and Piedmont 350 subjects as #39.

I'm sorry that it didn't work out. Darn.

SGC says it's rare so they can charge more for grading. They said the same thing to me when I wanted to have Matty Polar Bears and OM's crossed over from PSA.

I assumed by rare, he meant basically that it wasn't a piedmont back. Hopefully, he'll change his mind again. But, I doubt it.

I guess I should just pull up my floorboards and see what's down there...

Personally I don't think you missed out on much I wouldn't be surprised if that upper left is trimmed a bit.

I said last week that the card should grade a 2, and I still believe that. I really look forward to seeing what this card sells for after it's graded.

I agree that if real it's at best a 2 but looking at the listing I think it's bogus. The seller states it was found while renovating an old apartment in SF. Yeah right, the one card that is found just happens to be a Cobb not a common but one of the top 5 cards in the set and one with many reprints.

I vote fake!

Thanks for the responses. I'll now watch from the sidelines. If it's actually fake though, the fact that he didn't sell to me tells me that he had second thoughts on committing fraud. If that's the case, we may not see this card again.
