Default T206 collectors.....whats the average age of collectors?

Posted By: Dave F

may be easier to try this on a new thread. i'm gonna guess the T206 collectors overall are fairly high up in age bracket as opposed to maybe some collectors of other sets. michael, you and I may be some of the youngest next to someone like Trae.

again...i'm 31.

Will turn 45 soon. And look at least every bit of it. Started collecting at 26. My first card was a red background Cobb as a first anniversary gift.

Hello,
I love these fun posts that do not take a lot of thought!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! because I am the ADVANCED age of 59. I have collected many years. I bought my first T206 in 1985 from a collector in SCD. It was lower condition(good) but hard to now buy a T206 Speaker for $6.00. By the way, I still have it.

Don(still collecting) in South Dakota

I am 45 but don't necessarily collect t206 other than backs....however, collecting for many seems like a life long passion so anyone in their early 30's I would consider very young...relative to what we are speaking of.....Lionel is 88'ish.....so most of you guys (so far) have over 50 more years to collect.....You're just getting started.....regards

Well I'm pushing 55 (whatever that means) but most of my T206 collecting was in my 30's. I moved on to historic 19th century memorabilia and gave up cards before I hit 40.

45. I think it would be worrisome if the average age were 70. But it ain't.

Posted By: Zach Rice

Of all pre-war sets, I think the T206 set will have the largest amount of younger collectors collecting it, as well as older collectors. The reasoning behind this is simple, T206s are the most common cards of the era and are the easiest to find. If a young kid is looking to get involved in Pre-War baseball cards he or she is most likely to get a hold of a T206 card. They’re affordable, colorful, and include some of the biggest names in baseball’s history.

I purchased my first T206 card when I was twelve years old, a T206 Huggins. Why did I choose a T206 card to get me involved in old baseball cards? It was affordable, colorful, and it was the only set I could find, at the time, that had these old cards.

I'm now seventeen and I wouldn’t consider myself a T206 collector, necessarily, but I do pick up a Hall of Famer every so often. They’re neat cards but my collecting interests have changed to more esoteric sets.

I will always have a soft spot in my heart, however, for Cobb's and Mathewson's cards in the set.

Not specifically a T206 collector, but thought I'd ring in. The answer can actually be described by a very simple equation:

(Sum of ages of each collector)/(Number of collectors) < My current age.

Now that one I'm sure of! lol

it's good to be better than average!

Besides, you're only as old as you feel. (Look at Joe P!)
I too, have actually felt older ever since I started collecting vintage cards...weird

Turned 50 this past April. Started with T-206 about a month before that.
I think it's pretty neat that we have such age diversity on this board while
maintaining a common interest, even if it's not with a specific set.

Most of my collecting years are behind me.

I'm seriously thinking of taking on the 640 T210 set.
Is there anything wrong with this picture?

While some may say with good sound thinking behind them.
"Joe, you're out of your gourd, you should be thinking about Chumley's Rest."

One side of me say's, "Just give series Two a shot, and see what happens."
The other side of me say's, "Who are you kiddin, you know you want to go for the rest of them."

IS THERE A DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE?

So far a little surprised by the "younger" crowd...but rest assured there are a few other distinguished members who haven't spoken up yet that would raise the age a bit.

From a prior thread, the median age of active board members was 39. I should think T206 collectors are in the same ballpark. Mark

And I think the results will be skewed too young... Younger folks are more likely to be on the net. Older T206 collectors are less likely to be on the net. Not an ironclad concept, but generally valid.

Frank...I don't know that I'd call that skewed though. Ebay is a huge venue, in which realized ebay prices IMO dictate book values for T206's...and other issues.

So a 75 year old man that doesn't know what the internet is and only finds a T206 now and then at a general store or flea market doesn't do much to validate today's prices...or am I wrong? I think the consensus of where the hobby is going is based on the internet, and who is on the internet.

Actually, I would think that most T206 would be younger and then graduate on to other pre-war sets. However, what do I know?

I got my first 206 around 1982 or so but really only got singleminded about it
in the last 5 years or so.
I'm at 507 different 206s and still loving every minute of it.

best,

I'm not in, as I don't collect T206, but I had a moment to check out the data. So far our respondents' measures of central tendency are:

mean: 40.1
median: 37.5
mode: 31

I agree that those T206 collectors who participate on this forum are almost certainly younger than those who do not, but I think our own community is an interesting enough population to examine.

41 years of age and have been collecting everything since the 70's.. My first T 206 card was a gift from my parents in the early 80's... (Joe Tinker- bat on shoulder) I had it graded in 2002 and it came back a PSA 7...

That's great.
The day you hit 508 ... I want to hear it. ... I want this whole board to hear it. ... You're doing fantastic.

Hey Guys and Dolls (Oops, Damon Runyan).
The T206, is a deceptively suttle set. ... always has been.
So suttle that you don't realize that you're being hooked.
It takes its time, and baits its hooks with all different types of bait.

It could be a player.
It could be a team.
It could be a back.
It could be a printing variation.
It could be an error.
It could be anything that catches your fancy.
It starts there, and over a period of time you acquire a junkie that will keep you strung out with a T206 fix.

To those of you that start off as team collectors, or HOF collectors, do not be surprised if over the period of years, you start appreciating back collecting.
The set just grows on you, in a sneaky way.

If you're near the end of your quest, do not be surprised if you find yourself starting another one.

Guys and Dolls, we're talking about the most popular set of the 20TH/21ST Century.

My name is Joe Pelaez, and I'm a T206 addict.
