Default A. Marsans Baseball Contract 1916 Cuban Player

Posted By: chris

Hello All,

I was hoping to get an idea of value on a particular item. It is a 1916 player contract signed by Armando Marsans and Branch Rickey from 1916. From my research he was considered the first Cuban "star" in the majors. Any idea on the value. I have only a photocopy at this time as I am working to obtain it from someone. The signatures are both very clean and the contract is in overall pretty good condition. Thanks!
chris

Hi Clint

I don't know exactly but I would think a Marsans signature like that would be worth good money. Hopefully someone on here will have an idea of value for you. Try to post a scan when you can...It would be neat to see. Incidentally the only Texas Tommy (not to go too far off topic) I kept from my CA find is Marsans....

A 1916 Branch Rickey autograph alone is worth fair money. My guess would be over $1,000 for the contract. That's just a guess, knowing that the two signatures each are valuable and baseball contracts are always in demand. Also, contracts are safer items authenticity-wise, as a contract requires that, unless specifically noted, the real person signs it. If the real people don't sign a contract it isn't legally binding, and the player wants the salary and the owner wants the player.

Duly note that I'm not offering an authenticity opinion on the specific item. I have seen and owned a few early 1900s MLB contracts and they folded up distinctly, not unlike folded up road maps.
