t206 noob...think Im hooked.
Hey all,
Just got my first t206 card. Cobb bat on psa 3. I think Im hooked. I want more. This might sound stupid, but where do I start? Do I just go for the HOF's? Go for the 520? SL's? Minors? Do I just start chipping away one card at a time or try to obtain a good starting lot? I realize that if I wanted to obtain a complete (520) set, it will take me a long time. That is okay, as I think i will drop all other cards for a while and focus on the t206's. There is alot of info out there, and I would like some advice from you guys on where or how to start. Thanks alot. |

Just use the search feature of this site and read, read, read. You'll eventually come to your own conclusion on how and what you should collect. Good luck!

Sounds like the bug has hit you too!
IMO this board will help you out as much as anything. I am speaking from my experience. Especially the Ted Z threads. Good luck to you. "It's to late to turn back now." |

Oh boy, I should have expected some responses like that without doing a search. LOL.
I think I should do some more research before jumping in. But, I was thinking of starting out with the HOF's. Just 1 of each of all the HOF's, not all variations (cobb, young, lajoie, etc). And obviously not the Wagner or Plank. Or maybe Ill just start out with 1 of those cheap $50 reprint sets as something to work off of. |

The link above is very useful - lots of good stuff in it.
As for your question, I am trying to figure out the same things! I've been at it for about 2 months now. Great fun. The mistakes I have made have been - duh - in my first purchases. So if you are going for the HOFers, I'd suggest buying some commons to get you started. Pick your favorite team or the cards you like the looks of and buy less expensive cards. That way you can learn what to look for. My mistake was not examining the scan closely enough and depending too much on the grade. The other way starting with commons helped was I learned which grade to go for. Reading is also good. The books 'T206 Collection' and 'Collecting Sports Legends' have been great and of course the excellent PDF Inside T206 by Scot Reader. Good luck! Eric |

but where do I start?
Building this set can be a challenge, so here is my advice to you. Buy the T206s that appeal to you. With that in mind, I would recommend HOFers. If you buy a few and then realize that building the set is out of the question, then you still have some nice cards in your collection(that you like). Also HOF T206s are easier to resell if you have to sell them for some reason or another. I started this set just buying the commons and the pace was fast. Now I mainly need the HOFers & SLers and progress is down to a crawl. In time, you'll figure it out. Just collect what you like and you will always be happy with your collection. Hope this helps Jantz |
