Default Arnold Palmer

Just saw where Arnie had passed.
Tough day.

The closest I ever came to greatness was many years ago, when I served as a players' chauffer at the Southern Open.

Several of us were meeting for last-minute instructions when Mr. Palmer walked past with a bunch of admirers all around him.

We called out his name almost in unison and he waved back with a big smile.

I followed him (and Jack, Lee and Hale) around the course in Wailea at a Senior Skins Game in Hawaii around a decade ago and then made my way into the clubhouse for a beer with a chap I met during the event. Little did either of us know that we had crashed a private after event function and ending up drinking for free and sitting next to Arnie's wife and then Arnie for 1/2 hour!

They were both very friendly and charming. I had obtained his autograph while out on the course (got Jack and Lee's too).

RIP.

Just a terrible day in the sports world.

Arnie was pure class.
