Default W514 opinions on why they are not as popular.......

Posted By: JB

Is it simply supply and demand? Personally i like some of the cards, i just was wondering why they aren't as popular as some other issues. All opinions welcomed.

The quality of the player drawing is poor and they are a strip card, which almost uniformly means the cut and the size of the card is not uniform.

as brian said poor quality and kids cutting them make all strip sets unpopular w/collectors.

but,it is the most popular of the strip card sets. it has great player selection and there are the "black sox" cards.

It seems to me that new collectors do not care for strip cards, because of their nature. They don't care for the artwork, size, miscut shape, paper, and on and on...

And it seems to me as a collector matures and expands his collecting horizons, that there's a high likelihood that he'll start collecting one or more of the strip card sets.

If we got a simple poll going with questions: 1- how long have you collected pre WWII cards? 2- do you collect W514s or W515s? I'm confident that the W card collectors would be skewed toward the long time collectors.

So I think the answer to the question is because of the reasons in the first paragraph, coupled with how long the collector has collected.

30+ years of collecting. I've never really liked the strip cards, however I do own a couple. I've never picked up the bug to try and complete a set of W cards.

I have a W515 strip of 8 cards which contains 5 HOF's that I prize very highly. I think Frank's point about their growing on you as the years pass
rings quite true.

best,

barry

I think as you get into the later 1920's-early 1930's and real player photos becoe more prevalent, the popularity of those strip card issues is much greater. (W590 & W517 for example)

Most of the images aren't good representations, but a few are close enough.

I too agree with Barrys sentiments. The do grow on you and the W514 set has eight Black Sox players including Eddie Cicotte, Lefty Williams, Swede Risburg and,of course Joe Jackson.

Don't let this out, but at one time collectors thought small sized caramel issues were somewhat crude and undesirable. The W514's are definitely one of the nicest of the colored drawing strip sets, and a fair amount of the 120 cards issued are decent representations of the players, as well as pleasing to the eye--an example would be the Matty pictured above.

Becareful, strip cards can be very addicting. I really like w514s. I only have a couple (Everett Scott and Miller Huggins) but plan to expand when I finish with the monster.

IMO The W514 set is too large.

Not as many set collectors going after the cards as other "W" sets of 10-40 cards.

W514 is the only strip card that I collect, unless you call w575-1 a strip card. The drawings are good for a strip card, and the player selection and year are great. But since I don't expect them to rise in value, I buy make sure I get a good deal on them.

Strip cards in general never get a huge amount of attention. Many of them don't quite resemble the player they are supposed to depict. Personally, I lump a lot of the E121-like cards into W575-1..... and since they are photographic images they obviously look like the players they are supposed to...To each their own...
