Default 52 Mantle

Anyone have a site or some info that I can read to determine the difference between a real 52 mantle and one of the MANY fakes? I found one that looks somewhat real, but I am far from an expert. Any help is appreciated

there is a poster on the psa boards - name is Josh - who is very knowledgeable about the 52 mantle. he used to sell an online guide which was very detailed on the variations and how to spot a real vs. fake. not sure if Josh posts here or not.

All of the official reprints by Topps are different in size than the originals, so those are easy to weed out. Also, I think they're real glossy front and back, unlike the originals.

Take a magnifier and check out the white borders on front and cardstock on back. The borders on the originals are pure white, though obviously can be soiled and stained. A cheap computer reprint will probably have a fine muli-color dot pattern on the borders in some areas, especially if it reprints original staining or dirt. A cheap computer reprint of the card back, which would reproduce the original natural cardstock, will also be filled with multi color dots. The real 1952 Topps cardstock on back has no such dot pattern as it's just cardstock.

Also, if you have a blacklight, the back of the original card won't fluoresce brightly, while the back of many to most reprints and fakes will.

Unlike a T206 Honus Wagner, the 1952 Mantle is not impossible to find. It is possible to find a real one.

Eric, you're downgrading from a 2 to a 1?

Paul

Of course not... I'm happily holding onto my other PSA graded Mantles including a PSA 7 which will never leave my possession.
